How do you know if you have a fever/temperature without a thermometer?

Just that really. I don't have a thermometer and have no idea how I'd check if I had a fever or not? Would you have a headache or feel a bit hot? Im genuinely confused about this? I keep checking my forehead and it feels warm but no overly do?

I can usually tell my touching my kids' backs.
Skin will feel hot rather than warm.
When i have a temp i feel shivery but my skin is hot to touch.
HTH.

I wondered this too. And for those of us of a certain age who are hot and sweaty much of the time in particular!

Feeling hot and cold, like you can't regulate your body temperature. Cold sweats and chills. Sweating at night. I've got the flu right now but no thermometer.

In my experience when I have a temperature I feel cold and shivery but am hot to touch. With my kids they start to look a little flushed and want to snuggle up on the sofa with a blanket. I usually find their arms are a good place to feel for a temperature.

I always know as I start shivering and can't get warm.

Sounds odd, but when I breathe out I can feel my breath is hot. And sometimes my eyes feel hot.

You're supposed to feel your chest and back, because that's a more accurate guide. It will feel hot.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 19/03/2020 16:03

I think the guidance says if your chest and back are hot to touch you have a temperature.

Interesting. The one time in my life when I had the flu, my fever was so high I was delirious and I have a vague blurry memory of my mum sitting me up and trying to force me to drink some liquid paracetemol to bring my temp down. Obviously thats an extreme case, and I know flu is different to a coronavirus and the symptoms can be quite mild.

In my experience the higher my temperature the colder I feel, shivering under multiple duvets with the heating full on, not just a bit nippy. Also raging headache and not wanting to eat and generally feeling like crap. You'll know.
