I live in a coastal part of Wales where no cases of corona virus have (yet) been recorded. It is also a hot-spot for holiday makers and second home owners. Our GPs are pleading with people NOT to come here as our NHS system just cannot cope with extra residents at the moment. We have one hospital which covers a huge land area and some of the wards have already been closed down in order to be ready for the expected surge in cases.

With the schools now due to close early, how many of you (honestly) are planning to take holidays in Wales or other parts of the country which will be equally stretched such as Cornwall. Are any of you planning to move into your second homes or caravans?

The advice of non-essential travel was drafted for the simple reason of trying to prevent the spread of the virus so if you're coming from an area with a high number of cases to somewhere that has none, it doesn't take much to work out that the numbers in the holiday areas are going to increase. This is exactly what happened in Italy and Spain when people left the cities for the coast and took the virus with them. Can we not learn from what happened there and make sure we act differently?

If so, kindly explain what makes you think that decision is the right one? I'd really love to know how you justify this to yourselves in that your needs are more important than those of others.

I belong to a few fb groups where I've had to call out a few people about this. Luckily governments have closed themselves off to international travellers, but didn't stop one woman planning a trip to Blackpool. It's absolute selfishness at its worse.

This has been happening since the Black Death. It's a fact of this kind of thing. Crisis means people look out for themselves more.

I was thinking about this yesterday as we were considering going to stay near my parents - not to visit them at home but to be able to have walks in their company and make sure they have all they need. We thought if we self isolated for 2 weeks then the risk of us transmitting anything would be minimal - hopefully zero. If people were willing/able to self isolate before travel and/or self isolate when they arrive would that make it acceptable? We're leaning towards not doing it but if we did have a second home I can imagine the temptation to travel. Totally see where you're coming from though OP. Guess human nature means some people simply don't care...

Guess human nature means some people simply don't care...

Human nature is that we care about ourselves first. We're only generous with excess.

I live in London and Dsis lives in Cornwall. I wouldn't go and stay with her for the simple fact I know that if I get seriously ill, I'll have a far better chance of being treated here than I would at the one hospital they have. So I actually don't even understand the logic behind leaving London. We're all supposed to be staying in anyway so I'd rather do that in my own home.

This is why we'll all end up on lock down.

My mum lives in a small, popular holiday destination in West Wales and the 2nd homers are already beginning to clear out the local shops. One woman when questioned on what the locals are supposed to do when she tried to bulk buy in one of the local shops replied 'they'll just have to fend for themselves.'

The butcher has hundreds of pounds worth of orders already for people planning to rock up on Friday.

Closest hospital is miles away and covers a huge area. It's going to be chaos if these holidaymakers require healthcare.

I'm in a small town in Cornwall. This is exactly what is already happening. Our businesses are faced with an impossible choice of staying open and taking these people's money in the hope it might keep us afloat or wishing them all away together with our source of income. It's desperate. We are literally hanging on every day for more info about these grants.

Hi Can'tfixstupid

Are you based in Conwy by any chance? We were due to travel this weekend for a wedding. We arent but holiday cottage has been booked for 12 months and we cant get a refund.... we have been told by owners we might as well use it.... we arent going but £500 lost. Regardless of the money, the owners are still telling us to come.

The wedding venue also won't cancel because there are no cases in the county... which is odd as the local hospital have a few cases (family work there).

There is a lot of mis-information and greed unfortunately. Despite people trying to do the right thing and stay away... they are still being told everything is ok and to come.

We have a second home in Cumbria but have ruled out escaping there because the health provision is no where near the same level we have at home in the Midlands. We live rurally so it would be of no benefit re self isolating.
For anyone thinking about it be warned the only decent sized Tesco’s is in Barrow-in-Furness and they have run out of nearly everything because the town is at the end of a long cul-de-sac and the Tesco’s lorries will be permanently stuck in the huge traffic jam on the only road in.
I have a lot of family in the area and they deserve priority from their health services!

I live on the Welsh coast and this is happening here too. We're a small town that regularly grinds to a halt in the summer touristy months and can't cope with the second home types being here.

Surely people are past this point now? Of thinking this would be an ok thing to do?
