Bemused - tried to do a good deed...

I've joined a local FB group for Covid 19 in my area, lots of people have been posting offering help to those in need.

A lady posted this morning saying she had two very small poorly children and did anyone have spare calpol as her local chemist was sold out.

I messaged to say I had most of a bottle spare and offered to drop it off. We kept in touch through the morning, me asking for her address and if there was anything else she needed etc.

Anyway I messaged to say 10 minutes away (she read this) but when I got to her house (100% correct address) there was no answer. I tried phoning her but no response, I messaged to say I didnt want to just leave it on the doorstep in case a passerby pinched it. Her phone said she was online but still no response.

I waited for about 10 minutes, in the end I left it on the doorstep but now its niggling at me that it might be irresponsible to have left it there. However I didnt want her children to go without.

Have I been an idiot? Should I go back for it?! Confused

Stop worrying. If she has poorly kids at home she’s probably distracted and maybe wasn’t able to come to the door. You did a nice thing, no need to worry!

SoShere · 19/03/2020 14:03

She was probably busy and left her phone on the side.

Isla727 · 19/03/2020 14:06

That was a bit rude of her! You were still very kind though.

WatcherintheRye · 19/03/2020 14:06

Is it a bottle with a child proof top? If so, I wouldn't worry. Children getting hold of it is the only thing that would concern me.

Smidge001 · 19/03/2020 14:11

Surely if she's self isolating she shouldn't come to the door and the idea is you leave it on the dorrstep anyway, and she will pick it up after you've gone. I don't think you need to worry.

Thisismytimetoshine · 19/03/2020 14:16

Why should op have to guess what “the idea” was? Very rude not to respond.

purpleme12 · 19/03/2020 14:21

I agree that it was rude not to respond. Especially when she knew you were coming. Suspect if you ask me.
But no matter it's done now and you were being really nice so take pleasure in that

ellanwood · 19/03/2020 14:24

Why assume she's being rude? People aren't usually rude when others help them out. She could have had to rush a child to the GP or hospital if their illness took a turn for the worse. Or could have been coping with a child mid-vomit or convulsion. Use a bit of empathetic imagination, everyone, and don't be so quick to jump to judgement.

OP, you were kind and I'm sure she appreciated it.

Wolfgirrl · 19/03/2020 14:25

I sent a further message asking her just to confirm she got it, read and no response Hmm ah well...

ArriettyJones · 19/03/2020 14:27

I imagine she was vomited in at just the wrong moment and now is too embarrassed to respond.

Whatever the case, a good deed is still a good deed.

MayFayner · 19/03/2020 14:28

Sounds like she stopped bothering to respond once she knew she was getting it. Throw your good deed into the sea and forget about her.

Horehound · 19/03/2020 14:29

She's a twat. You will always have arseholes looking for free stuff, even during a shit time like this.
I bet she wanted to sell it on and didn't want an opened bottle already...

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 19/03/2020 14:29

Nice one OP, that's a lovely gesture. Maybe rude if she doesn't respond at some point but the Universe Knows You've Done A Good Thing Smile

People are very naïve on here..

flowerstar19 · 19/03/2020 14:29

Maybe her kids are playing on her phone, my 5 year old swipes messages out of his way if he is trying to watch something on my phone! Kind of you to help x

It's very, very true.

Oh I don’t know. I’m normally quite cynical about what some people do, but it doesn’t seem the time to be jumping to worst scenarios and marinating in indignation.

The important point to this story - to me - is that OP was kind. We need kindness ATM.

userxx · 19/03/2020 14:32

Think she's having you at it. FB is full of twats.

Wolfgirrl · 19/03/2020 14:49

She just messaged to say thanks and that shes just woken up. Not sure why my messages were read then but hey ho! Alls well that ends well Smile

turdtimelucky · 19/03/2020 15:00

FB shows me online all the time if I don't back out of it on my phone. An ex of mine used to challenge me as to my whereabouts the night before (dead to the world) as apparently I showed as online all the time. I was asleep. He figured I was out cavorting. He's an ex.

The80sweregreat · 19/03/2020 15:39

Well done though.
Nice to read people helping each other.

Wolfgirrl · 19/03/2020 16:07
