Nursery refuse to take my DC!

DreamInLavender · 19/03/2020 12:09

I spoke to management today and just wanted some confirmation that I could still send DS in (they sent an email out saying they're happy to try and sort things for essential workers at this time).

They asked me what I do and then said no, they couldn't take DC as I'm not an essential worker Confused

I am, and if we go into lockdown our services are classed as essential and will continue to run. Is it really up to the nursery if they take DC or not, or are they discriminating? Yes of course they can set their own rules but not ones that discriminate surely.

I'm fuming and honestly don't know what I'll do Sad

What do you do?!

SinkGirl · 19/03/2020 12:13

The government should be producing a list of essential workers, so they should have to follow that. It’s all very unclear at the moment.

Tootletum · 19/03/2020 12:15

If you're not police, healthcare or delivery driver then as of right now you're not essential.

Soontobe60 · 19/03/2020 12:17

Are you going to tell us what your job is OP?

Morgan12 · 19/03/2020 12:33

Why would you post this without saying what your job is?

Sweatheart · 19/03/2020 12:44

If you're not police, healthcare or delivery driver then as of right now you're not essential.

Dont we need social workers, shop workers or fire fighters then? That's good news.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 19/03/2020 12:45

What’s the job?

SoShere · 19/03/2020 12:46

Key workers list should be out later.

Tootletum · 19/03/2020 12:48

@sweetheart this isn't my opinion it's what I've read in the announcement yesterday. Bit weird as they variously said police and then emergency workers but would seem bizarre for fire not to be included. Anywya I'm sure they'll clarify at some point.

RedRed9 · 19/03/2020 12:49

Our local school (and I imagine many others) have a priority tier list. For as long as they can accommodate everyone on every tier then they’ll do so. When they don’t have enough staff they’ll stop incorporating the bottom tier, then the next etc etc.

You’re a PA OP, you need to accept that right not you’re not as high a priority as eg a nurse.

If I were you I’d be speaking to the consultants etc you manage and working out the absolute best way to be able to support them from home.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 19/03/2020 12:50

While the definition of key-worker was not discussed by Mr Johnson, this traditionally refers to NHS workers, police officers, supermarket delivery drivers and those who look after the vulnerable and elderly

A full list has not yet been revealed by the Government but those classed as being a "key worker" could be expanded to include other professions such as social workers, firefighters and more.

List is not yet finalised but are you one of these?

DrSheldonCooperPHD · 19/03/2020 12:50

What's the point in posting without your job title?

Butterymuffin · 19/03/2020 12:51

Wait for the list to come out, then you can go back to them and say 'yes I am'. Or accept that you'll need to do something else, if you're not on it.

CuriousCapricorn · 19/03/2020 12:52

Well you are clearly not or you would have disclosed your occupation in your op Hmm

vixb1 · 19/03/2020 12:54

An earlier poster said you were a PA? If that's the case, get a grip!

And don't use words like "discrimination" at a time like this. You are being ridiculous! Nurseries are facing a really difficult time and working out what to do. They have enough going on without nutty parents, full of their own self importance, trying to make their jobs harder!

Have a calm cup of tea and work out how you are going to sensibly manage your way through this difficult time without being an attention seeker!

RedRed9 · 19/03/2020 12:59

From an advanced search (sorry OP but it really annoyed me that you posted without actually saying what your job was when that is obviously the vital piece of information), the OP is a part time PA for a medical clinic.

Not dismissing the fact that that is an incredibly important job. But is it classed an an essential worker? What department do you work in OP? How much can be done (albeit with difficulty) at home?

NotDisclosedToday · 19/03/2020 12:59

discriminating?
GTFO

HappyHammy · 19/03/2020 13:00

it all depends on the job people do, a keyworker is someone who other people rely on, who keep the country going, who provide essential services, they are also usually the most undervalued and underpaid workforce.

tellmetostopbutikeepongoing · 19/03/2020 13:01

Not as essential as you thought you were 😬

Irial · 19/03/2020 13:01

Is it really up to the nursery if they take DC or not, or are they discriminating?

how is it discrimination?

Ginkypig · 19/03/2020 13:04

We luckily won't need to use childcare under these rules but if we did I wonder if my Dp would be on the list, my feeling is probably not as he is "just" a cleaner

Except he is a cleaner in a school who will be still going in cleaning for the children of the key workers so they can keep the country running and care for the ill etc, He is taking this job seriously to try to keep the environment as safe as possible for the children and adults who are using the building and has also taken on the extra responsibilities of the janitor (with no extra money) as that allows the actual janitor to isolate because he is currently having chemotherapy and had to have his kidney removed due to cancer and he deserves to keep safe due to the potentially deadly impact on him.

I do wonder though if he would be seen as a key worker.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/03/2020 13:08

As nurseries don't fall under the government remit they can make whatver decisions they choose. If the choose to only cater for key workers, they can define those workers themselves too!

I wonder if my Dp would be on the list, my feeling is probably not as he is "just" a cleaner Sensibly school cleaners will be classed as 'key' whilst the school has chlidren in it, and again for a deep clean once it has not. Hospitals ect will be the same, most support staff will be key to keeping it open. That's one of the reasons they haven't rushed with a list, I suspect!
