'persistent cough'

(hope the photo works!) This is the NHS description of the persistent cough. Coughing for an hour, 3 times a day. How do you cough for an hour? Does it mean constant coughing for an hour?

I’ve asked the same question on my thread too. It’s so confusing isn’t it! Especially when they keep changing the description. I wonder about the constant coughing for one hour. That seems impossible?

CrunchyCarrot · 19/03/2020 08:56

For me, it means a cough that won't let up, so you feel you're coughing a lot. If I have to start counting and timing re NHS definitions, I think that will be going a bit too far! You know when you're coughing a lot.

CherryPavlova · 19/03/2020 08:59

I pretty much cough for extended periods (haven’t timed them). I start with a tickle feeling that builds then cough and cough until it feels like I’m going to be sick or pass out. My ribs and back are quite sore from hacking away. Think severe whooping cough type thing - although many, fortunately, won’t have heard a full on severe pertussis, I guess.

The sore throat is also a searing pain in my ears when I swallow,

Yes it’s not clear and could result in people going out while infected and symptomatic passing it on.

We are all occasionally coughing here and mine is a bit worse today, but definitely not for an hour. If we are infected we easily ignore it and go out. We are now staying home.

TamaraDeLempicky · 19/03/2020 09:05

When I first developed whooping cough in my early thirties, I was coughing every minute of the day. Nothing would get rid of that cough. I couldn't talk for coughing! To me, THAT'S persistent.

mctagmcbag · 19/03/2020 09:08

if you are coughing repeated many times a day... a dry cough... take precautions, that's it. Use you intelligence to judge it

Exactly my thoughts. I’ve had a cough started a few days ago. I was coughing repeatedly and got worse at night. It kept me up all night. So I decided to self isolate, the cough is a lot better now after 2 days. But it’s not been 7 days yet so will continue to isolate.

When I been talking to people. I’ve asked if it’s a new continuous cough. Straight away they say no. But then when I start asking them about how often they’ve been coughing. That’s when I’ve found out that it is continuous. “Oh I’ve been coughing every 10 mins but it’s not continuous, I’ve been coughing on and off throughout the day”etc. If people don’t understand then that can’t be safe Confused

There is no picture. Is this the NHS description of the Coronavirus cough or just standard information re coughing?

I think people really need to self isolate with coughs that are far less severe than what you're describing.

I questioned it because OP talks about NHS advice and 'persistent' cough. Corona virus advice is 'continuous' cough. Without the picture the OP isn't clear.

Whobloodyknows · 19/03/2020 09:41

I saw a health professional a few days ago and they said it is the constant urge to cough, about every 10 seconds or so Confused

grandmasterstitch · 19/03/2020 10:48

I'm in self isolation because of a cough. I'm struggling to define "persistent" but it's more than just a tickle or a throat clear. Maybe I'm being over cautious but I'm willing to isolate and it be nothing than the alternative

HiDuggee · 19/03/2020 18:38

DH has a chesty cough, I wouldn't say he's coughing for an hour at a time , but it was hard to know what to do for the best, we are now isolating as precaution. Begrudgingly as I don't want 2 weeks off when when I feel fine Sad I feel guilty like I'm doing something wrong, I work in a supermarket and they really need me. Not much we can do, I just feel guilty and hope we've done the right thing
