Should be whole UK lockdown - not just London?

As Northern Italy and Madrid have proved, partial lockdowns just lead to many people trying to "escape" the area, go to second homes etc etc.

Also how will "London" be defined - just London boroughs? Is there really any different risk of somone in Surbiton (london borough) to Thames ditton (Surrey county council) just down the road.

The last clear stuff is the more confusion/lack of compliance, people thinking "it densest apply to me"

Lockdown has no single meaning.

What level of restriction are you envisaging for the purposes of thread?

Bagelsandbrie · 19/03/2020 08:23

They need a UK wide lockdown like France. People just aren’t listening to the social distancing advice.

Nomorewine77 · 19/03/2020 08:27

Yes I think there should be, if my small rural town is anything to go by people are just carrying on as if nothing's changed and this isn't really happening!

Connie222 · 19/03/2020 08:34

Yes I think there should be.
There seems to be a vast amount of people who are not taking the advice on social distancing.
On my local Facebook page there are calls for other parents to meet up with children in groups etc.
I don’t understand the mentality and many people won’t take it seriously until they are forced to.

The trouble is most people see everything from their own individual point of view - they are incapable of seeing the bigger picture. When social distancing, is suggested everyone thinks of a reason why it doesn't apply to them. Because it is voluntary, people don't see the necessity. Make a rule and enforce it and people are far more likely to comply. In France, for instance, the rules are now very clear and the vast majority are following them. Those who don't are sanctioned. For the same reason I think some sort of rationing will eventually have to be introduced in UK supermarkets because the general population are quite simply not capable of self-regulating.

Rosehip10 · 19/03/2020 08:41

I think there needs to be clear, consistent messages for the whole UK re lockdown.

There are still large areas of the country which have just a few individual cases or small clusters. It would still be feasible to isolate and contain these if we followed WHO recommendations - test and isolate every suspected case, aggressively trace all contacts and test and isolate them too. Large areas of the country could continue to operate pretty much as normal which would help our entire economy stay afloat.

This will only work if we can stop people leaving London - and probably other large towns and cities too by now. I don't mean ask people nicely I mean road blocks put in place without prior warning. Let people explain at the checkpoints why they're so special the rules should not apply to them.

It's probably too late, the exodus has begun. Everything our government has done in response to this virus has been too little, too late. Even though they've got ample examples of countries a few days, a couple of weeks ahead of us to learn from.

So yeah, after London locks down the rest of the country will follow in a few days.

lubeybooby · 19/03/2020 09:09

Yes and ideally last week rather than some indefinite time in future. We're already too late to avoid overwhelming ICU as the maths and graphs shows.

HowIrresponsible · 19/03/2020 09:13

London has the orbital motorway though

You could honestly seal off the whole city easily at the M25.

Northern Italy...big region and hard to stop people leaving

Connie222 · 19/03/2020 09:15

Don’t judge me but I watched Dr Hillary on Lorraine - he was saying it’s fine to go out to eat as long as there are a couple of meters between you and the other diners.

Personally, I don’t agree. But there are huge swathes of people who listen to daytime TV doctors.

On the London lockdown - We moved out of London in January and already I’ve had friends asking if they can come and stay with us if London is locked down. I’ve said no obviously. They aren’t happy and I’ve not been popular. But I’m in a risk group and we are all staying indoors and having no contact with anyone.

I think this is so irresponsible. This is literally what every other country was doing and it led to a jump in cases and a lockdown. Italy didn't know but the uk has no excuse!

Connie222 · 19/03/2020 09:20

@Seventyone72seventy3 how many people will have seen that and thought “great! I can pop out for lunch!” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Bookworm83 · 19/03/2020 09:23

Lockdown yes, but there would have to be clear exceptions. For example I'm due to give birth very soon in a hospital which is in a town 40 minutes drive from my village. So I need to be able to travel out of my area.

alloutoffucks · 19/03/2020 09:37

You can still travel to get food, vets, pharmacy, medical treatment and yes to give birth.
