Confused- children of key workers?

keentohelp · 19/03/2020 06:44

Will schools be open to children who only have one key worker parent, or will it need to be both parents to be eligible?

The DoE sent out an email last night to school. Hopefully that will be released to the public today.

LooseGoose29 · 19/03/2020 06:50

Don't know the answer to that.
Can I cheekily add another question is it compulsory for children with a keyworker parent to attend? I am a TA and it is looking like we are keyworkers but selfishly I'd rather my daughter wasn't at school without her friends. My sister is a SAHM at the moment.

keentohelp · 19/03/2020 06:52

I'm not sure- my friend is also worried about the same thing for her little girl which is why I'm asking. If it's just for children who have two key worker parents then she's going to be very, very alone at nursery!

Here in Wales it’s been made clear (via questionnaires sent by our schools) that either both parents have to be essential workers or one single parent has to be. I’m an essential worker, DH isn’t so we won’t qualify.

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 19/03/2020 07:01

I'm pretty sure both parents have to be keyworkers to qualify.
@LooseGoose29 I don't think they can enforce you sending dc.

Selfsettling3 · 19/03/2020 13:08

@LooseGoose29 I imagine it’s optional.

MillieMoodle · 19/03/2020 13:12

DSs school have made it very clear that if key workers have partners at home who are not key workers, the children are expected to be at home with them.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/03/2020 13:16

You'll have to wait until BJ makes the formal announcement. They are still discussing it and finalising the details!

fedup21 · 19/03/2020 13:18

Schools are still waiting for clarification on who key workers are and what this will look like.

is it compulsory for children with a keyworker parent to attend

Of course not! It’s childcare to enable you to work. If you don’t need it, they don’t go!! The fewer child in school the better

KittenVsBox · 19/03/2020 13:21

Our school has said both parents key workers, and wherever possible, children should remain away from school.

FinallyHere · 19/03/2020 13:41

I'm pretty sure both parents have to be keyworkers to qualify.

In that case, let's hope that the key workers are earning enough to keep the whole family. I can't see how that would work in much of London.

Katykitten2 · 19/03/2020 16:04

It seems obvious to me that where only one parent is a key worker then the other parent will have to stay at home with the child/ren and not work. These are difficiult times for ALL of us. There are millions who are going to lose their jobs, we have all got to pull together.

Poetryinaction · 19/03/2020 16:07

So confusing. I am a teacher. My dh is working from home. My ds school says he has to stay home. My school says I have to go in. My nursery says open to key workers (no mention of one or both) and full fees expected from everyone.

keentohelp · 19/03/2020 16:29

@Katykitten2 I don't think anyone is going to disagree with you on that- just wanted to see if it could be clarified!

Firstawake · 19/03/2020 17:27

Both

stardance · 19/03/2020 17:31

I'm assuming both parents but waiting to have that confirmed!

britnay · 19/03/2020 17:42

I don't think that they have released a definitive list of the key workers yet. My husband is a farmer. He cannot look after the children while he is working. Is he a key worker?

PerfectParrot · 19/03/2020 17:49

britnay, I'd be utterly amazed if farmers aren't classed as key workers.

That said, the DfE haven't released their guidance yet. The email from them yesterday didn't include details, so our school just sent out a survey to try to get a rough estimate of who would be seeking to send their children in and if childcare would be wanted for extended hours, weekends and during the Easter holidays.

diddl · 19/03/2020 17:52

So if both parents need to be key workers, I wonder if any will make the choice for the key worker to stay at home & look after the kids?

TheReluctantCountess · 19/03/2020 17:55

My child’s school have not made any contact with regard to closing or who it will be open for.

LastTrainEast · 19/03/2020 17:56

diddl being allowed into the school isn't a reward. It's safer to have them at home, but some must go so that key workers who don't have childcare can do their jobs.

So yes both parents of course.

Autumndaysarehereagain · 19/03/2020 17:57

My nursery hasn’t said it is to be both so I hope so!
I work in a hospital and have been asked today to increase my hours from 30 to 48 a week with extra nights/weekend shifts. If we can leave toddler in nursery a few days it will provide him some normality and let me sleep after night shift.

Redcrayons · 19/03/2020 18:00

Our school has advised that all children stay off but they will be open for children of key workers if they have no other options. They won’t be running lessons but guided study in library or IT labs. It’s secondary, so I imagine there won’t be much uptake.

If you absolutely need it then I’m sure it will be an option for you.

Direduldrums · 19/03/2020 18:01

We were told today that key worker parents can attend but only if the other parent is not a key worker. My situation is that I am a single parent of 3 school age children. I work shifts for the nhs and the school have said because my ex isn’t a key worker, we don’t qualify. He works full time in the private sector and won’t get paid for time off so therefore can’t have them. It’s looking likely that although I am a keyworker, I will have to not go to work due to my children’s school refusing to provide care for them. Pretty sure most parents will be in the same situation as the nhs salary especially band 2/3 is just not enough to live off.

britnay · 19/03/2020 18:03

I've just seen absolutely nothing mentioned of agriculture in any lists that I've seen.
I've already been asked to do extra hours at work, we are absolutely rammed at the moment. Desperately trying to keep up with the extra workload.
