How safe are we at home?

This sounds ridiculous but things like post coming in, deliveries, takeaways??
Should we be wiping everything down?
Obviously we wash our hands after handling everything.

I'm dettol-ing the living fuck out of anything that comes into the house. Including post.

I ask the delivery drivers to drop it round the back, dettol it and leave it out for at least three hours. The cat looked very bemused when I did it to his dreamies out of the tesco shop.

But I'm also an autistic germaphobe. I've been training for this disaster my whole life Grin

Having read that this virus can stay active on certain surfaces for up to 9 days, my family and I are being careful.

I am asking each delivery man to please leave the item in our garage, which is next to our front door and we open with a remote control. We can talk through the front door (glass section). They all look very happy about that! It's safer for them too.

We then leave the items a few days before opening them. Of course it does mean we can't order fresh groceries, only cupboard items now.

We have perfume spray bottles we have filled with 70% rubbing alcohol to use whenever necessary.

I have to be super cautious because I have bad asthma. Still scared of making a mistake though.

The safest place is at home.

I think we all need to calm down a bit...

Do you think?

WhataMissMap · 19/03/2020 16:45

I’m walking the dog, when we get home I carry him through the house then soap and wash his paws in the shower. Thank goodness he isn’t a Great Dane. I’m not sure it’s necessary. Any thoughts ?

Started doing it after I saw a council workman spitting on the pavement near where we were walking.

Strange times we are living through.

userxx · 19/03/2020 16:53

@WhataMissMap Might be easier if you just buy some dog wipes.

@MrsKypp that’s the way I’ve been feeling - although I’m panicking about everything, I’m unsure if it’s safe to handle cans of coke and what have you, the bleach bottle even because it was in a basket in the shop - I mean how far do we go ? Bleach the bleach bottle then wash our hands again? I’d happily do that if it makes things safer ... it’s the two weeks thing that frightens me - I keep thinking , two weeks and I’ll know if I’m ill ... every person that comes near the door I damn near panic and run away from them in case their breath catches on my clothing .

@Rocketmam In case you don't know, Dettol is very toxic to cats so please be careful using it around your cat or on anything they will come into contact with.

Knocksomesense · 19/03/2020 18:38

@goingoverground thanks. I was musing rather than worrying. Just contemplating

Rocketmam · 19/03/2020 22:09

@viccat I think it will be alright. I was cleaning the outside of the box inside which are his foil pouches.

And the boxes are kept locked where he can't get at them because he is an expert thief! Grin

devildeepbluesea · 19/03/2020 22:13

@goingoverground what a very excellent post, thank you.

MrsKypp · 20/03/2020 21:04

@cantbelievewhativeheard

I feel exactly the same as you (((((hug)))))
