No your previously self-isolating kid can't go to school tomorrow!

I'm on a parents fb group. Apparently run by muppets. A few folk have taken kids out of school over the last week due to their own al'precautionary measures'. Now school is closing on Friday they're all over the group saying how they want little Johnny to go in today and Friday so they don't miss out on Y11 leaving school experience.

I know that this week the school have been following advice and having students collected who have siblings self-isolating, as well as those with listed health concerns. All students self isolating are marked with a special code on registers for the period of their isolation.

I get it, my son is in Y11 and tomorrow will be his last day in secondary school, don't even get me started on exam situation. But AIBU to think that if you've been worried enough to self-isolate you don't jeopardise everything for this?

YANBU. Some people are idiots. The leaving school experience? FFS! Clearly they just don't understand the whole concept of self-isolation.

DryHeave · 19/03/2020 05:59

We’ll all soon have first hand experience of people around us having the “leaving life” experience.

Tellmetruth4 · 19/03/2020 06:02

Some people are being caught out with the self isolating now. My friend was self isolating last week but was still down the pub one evening Hmm.

Elephantonascooter · 19/03/2020 06:02

Have I missed something? Have they confirmed this will be the last day of school this year? Cuz last I checked, it was for an indefinite amount of time.
But no. Ynbu

Stronger76 · 19/03/2020 06:13

I suspect it will be for y11 students. First summer exams were due to start in 7 weeks, now they're not taking them there will be little point them going back to school even if they open after Easter. Other than for babysitting. All y11s will be leaving school by the last Friday in June - though in practice most schools consider students finished by the last exam (which for my son should have been 12/6/20, 13 weeks from now)

For yr 11 schools finish once exams start (or just after) - no exams so unlikely to restart.

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/03/2020 06:14

The school won’t let them in.

Fatted · 19/03/2020 06:21

Some people just see the passing bandwagon and want to jump on.

Based purely on my own experience with the general public, I think self isolating is being abused by those people who look for any excuse to get out of everything. I know people who are using it as a free pass for two weeks off.

Stronger76 · 19/03/2020 06:22

@purpleflower I hope not. Same parent posted on Tues with the battle cry of 'must keep kids off at all costs despite no symptoms'. 24 hours later and I'm going to send him in anyway to see if he can sneak in.

@Fatted I think you're right.

You can't argue with stupid, film on twitter of US students heading to Florida for Spring Break.

Casino218 · 19/03/2020 06:30

The same mentality as feeding fish and chips through school fences when Jamie Oliver
tried to stop turkey Twizzlers!

Leflic · 19/03/2020 06:31

Fatted I feel the same. I know it’s being used by people that have no symptoms or indeed family to worry about.

Cherrysoup · 19/03/2020 06:50

There will be no Year 11 leaving experience. It will be my last lesson on Friday, I’m not looking forward to it, it’s going to be carnage. If they want to see mate’s, they should FaceTime.

bananaskinsnomnom · 19/03/2020 06:51

I get it OP, I work at an infant school and we’ve lost a few to self isolation, some with vulnerable parents or family members (fair enough) and some who felt (very strongly and shouted it to us) that they should.

Funnily enough, to try and brighten spirits, the school have decided to bring the Easter Egg hunt forward to today to save all the collected eggs going to waste. Funnily enough, some parents have requested their children attend the egg hunt and go straight back home! I love looking at my emails first thing....

JKScot4 · 19/03/2020 06:53

These are the same parents who have kept them off but let them go to Mcdonald’s and mill about the town centre. Think they need the meaning of isolation explained to them.

Radarred · 19/03/2020 06:57

My ds is self isolating so not attended school this week. My mum said to me he should go into school on Friday so he gets the leaving experience.

Of course, I told her no he wont be going in because he is self isolating and explained why this was a stupid suggestion.

Pinkarsedfly · 19/03/2020 07:02

God, some parents need to grow up. You start to see why some kids are like they are. They’re entitled, shallow brats being raised by entitled, shallow brats.

I predict a deep learning curve ahead for some.

feelingverylazytoday · 19/03/2020 07:06

film on twitter of US students heading to Florida for Spring Break
Florida is going to be decimated by this, they have a lot of retirees.

Marieo · 19/03/2020 07:07

They made the choices, they should stay home. Feel a bit sad for those with overbearing parents who decided for them though.

MGMidget · 19/03/2020 07:21

If they were isolated because they were afraid to go to school because of what they might pick up rather than because of high temp or continuous cough within their household then it should be up to them if they want to come back. However if it was for high temp/continuous cough in the household then they can’t come back until 7 days have passed.

PhoneTwattery · 19/03/2020 07:23

@PurpleFlower1983

The school won’t let them in.

That would be damn near impossible in my school unless they print registers and have staff on the door!

MGMidget · 19/03/2020 07:24

Correction...until 14 days have past if its because of someone else in their household or 7 days if they have been the one with the symptoms.

PrednoLeucotropin · 19/03/2020 07:25

Pinkarsedfly I could not agree with you more. I can't even look at my FB at the moment and am seriously reconsidering some of my friendships.

If only this virus selected out the stupid instead of the elderly and sick.

lowlandLucky · 19/03/2020 07:25

WTF is the "leaving school" experience ? We have 6 children aged 30+ down to 18 and have never heard or given it a seconds thought. Mybe these Mothers should be more bloody concerned about their offsprings "first day at work and joining the big grownup world" experience. Jeez oh, no wonder we have a generation of adult babies
