To be cross with M&S for this?

I work for M&S, 2 and a half years, not one day taken as sick leave. Tried to follow Boris "strong" advice to self Isolate due to underlying conditions today. M&S Policy says as it's only "advice" I have to take it unpaid on this "occasion" ....meaning don't try it again, you work Dodger, and I'm expected back in on my shift into the heaving food hall as that's the only place making money. AIBU to be feel unsupported by M&S.?..Daily Mail feel free.......

@EverdeRose thanks for everything you and colleagues are doing for the public during this tough time.. please look after yourself though!
Yea Boris and the UK may seem a little behind other counrues just washing their hands singing happy birthday, but as mentioned above they've been dropped in deep end and still figuring out a way forward.. Also the delay has meant children have still been at school, people at work, life continuing as normal for as long as poss so there hasn't been a knock on effect with people struggling for weeks already with childcare, income worries etc
All in this together and need to support each other.

@Medievalist I mean the large businesses who've been offered the first round of bail outs; I understand smaller businesses, but large ones? Nope.
If they can find large loans with no interest for the businesses and 'comprehensive business interruption' packages in the 'short amount of time' they've had, then they could've also found the time to make a plan for those who're self-employed, renting, on ZHC... They're just the after-thoughts in this.

All I keep hearing is we'll be helping those in 'the coming days' - never mind the fact that people aren't earning money now.

Lanurk · 19/03/2020 09:33

My mum works for markies too and has a crap immune system but work has told her to get on with it. Sad

StillDisappointed · 19/03/2020 09:35

Again, Medieval, it's likely that the current situation doesn't affect you.
You'd be as incredulous as the others in this situation if you were (or had loved ones who were) working themselves into the ground and making themselves ill with absolutely no support from anyone.

I don't think you're understanding the implications. He is earning no money, not a penny. He can not afford to live, there is no SSP for him.
Yet there's nothing in place for him.

EverdeRose · 19/03/2020 09:36

Thank you emz410

I've had a very serious discussion with DH, as soon as they tell us to go into the 12 week isolation period I will be doing, if work don't like me following government advice I don't want to work for them any more.

EMZ410 · 19/03/2020 10:03

Well said @EverdeRose and I really don't blame you! Same goes @Lanurk, your mum should be doing the best thing for herself.. stuff what m&s have to say to put it politely, healths more important! Managers in retail just look out for themselves, hence why i had to get outa there lol

Medievalist · 19/03/2020 10:12

I mean the large businesses who've been offered the first round of bail outs; I understand smaller businesses, but large ones?

You mean the large businesses on which the economy depends and who employ thousands of people who will be out of a job if those businesses collapse?

Yes, they've been covered in the first round. That doesn't mean there won't be help for smaller businesses/the self-employed.

Amber2019 · 19/03/2020 10:13

All work places are the same. We are at home, unwell. Partner is at work, the government need to shut down. Its when things start to get back to normal, companies are going to be letting staff go due to losses. First to go will be the ones that didnt stick it out "supporting" the companies

Medievalist · 19/03/2020 10:13

Again, Medieval, it's likely that the current situation doesn't affect you.

Don't make assumptions based on zero knowledge.

StillDisappointed · 19/03/2020 10:21

@Medievalist You're telling me those large business are in immediate need of financial help? I'm not under any impression that they may not need help further down the line, but right now the people living day to day need help first and foremost.
It breeds resentment that the first port of call is to help those in positions of relative security.

You can't honestly be trying to tell me that the large businesses are in more dire need than those self-employed, running small businesses or working within the gig economy on ZHC with no fall back.

Are you directly affected then? Are you, or a family member, struggling to live day to day now with no idea where the money to eat, let alone pay bills, is coming from?

Medievalist · 19/03/2020 10:29

@StillDisappointed

I've no intention of answering your questions - it would be too outing. You're making sweeping generalisations based on your own personal experience.

MrsPMT · 19/03/2020 10:36

Thats shocking OP, really not impressed with the attitude of M&S.

And to others whose employers are being unsupportive.

My work (Council) are being very supportive of those with underlying conditions. As they should be.

StillDisappointed · 19/03/2020 10:54

@Medievalist
It would be too outing to say whether or not you're affected? Don't be ridiculous. I'm not asking for your job title and location.

I'm not making generalisations, I'm just very aware of the fact that the people who're making excuses for the government, saying they're doing the best they can and whatever else they can cook up are the ones who aren't affected. It's very obvious.

catanddogmake6 · 19/03/2020 10:55

@StillDisappointed, on a practical level has he tried talking to local corner shops and cafes etc to offer to do deliveries? Alternatively advertising directly to those in self isolation that he can pick things up. Possibly NHS staff etc as the tube network shuts. Apologies if he has tried these things but social media/ facebook is more likely to be his friend than just driving round the streets. Drivers will be in demand - the BBC documentary from Wuhan showed that. Genuinely sorry for how scary it is and these ideas are only meant to be helpful if he hasn’t already though about them.
