She's 105.

I'd say she's entitled to take her chances.

Maybe they want her to get it, finish the old girl off once and for all

If I made it to 105, I would hope to be partying in the pub, with my fuck-you-virus hat on!

I know, I have agreed to visit and aunt in her 70's tomorrow. I arranged to see her before we were all told to do social distancing, after monday I tried to call it off but she wants me to come says she'll be in total misery if unable to see people and is all alone. She says whats the point of being alive?

Just don't know what to do, she will be so upset if I don't go but I'm scared I could pass something on to her.

To be fair, she's unlikely to see another one anyway, so I say go for it (and I'm generally fucking furious with pubs open, people still going to cafes etc)

I will suggest it, how exactly do we shed virus anyway? Is it just from body fluids and coughing?

No, sorry that's not how this works. You don't get a hall pass just because you're very old.
The strain on the NHS is going to be bad enough without having avoidable situations like this.
When children are having operations cancelled (as reported on BBC News) to make space for future coronavirus patients, acting as though nothing is happening, ignoring government advice and putting yourself at risk is selfish in the extreme. We are putting our economy on the line mainly to protect the older members of the population. The least they can do is make an effort not to catch it by staying in.

Lets assume, at that age she is, at the very least in sheltered housing, if not a residential or nursing home. What happens when she passes something on to all the other residents? given that on another post it has been shockingly revealed
The hospital she works in has 12 ventilators, the planning documents say they need 256

Exactly @Onemorehitandillcrumble

I don't think the elderly are taking this as seriously as they should. What's the point in us all self isolating if they're going to go and contract it anyway. I'm disappointed and surprised that the pub didn't cancel.

I'm utterly shocked at some of the responses on here.

So if this old lady becomes unwell - is she going to die alone in her bed, or will someone call an ambulance for her where she'll likely need to be hooked up to a ventilator? But that's ok because it's her choice?

I mean, her 'taking her chances' might mean there isn't a bed for a mother of 2 in her 40s with asthma, or a nurse who's been working round to clock in ICU. But so long as she can catch the virus on her own terms right? Hmm

I wonder if these elderly people will expect medical attention and admission to ITUs in the event of them taking ill. They'll be totally shocked when an ambulance won't be available for them or the GP won't pay a home visit or they're stuck in a corridor on a trolley and left to gasp their last.

They're putting the rest of the population at risk. Younger people and children won't be receiving treatment for other health problems due to this virus. We all have a responsibility to try and limit its spread.

A 105 year old nursing home resident wouldn't be admitted to ICU even in normal circumstances, so she won't be taking up a bed either way.

I think tbh if you are in your seventies and fairly good health with a few more years to enjoy, self isolating is a really good idea. If you’re in your eighties, nineties and beyond, you may as well enjoy it while you can.

DM’s home has stopped visits and trips out for the foreseeable but most of the residents are frail, very elderly or have dementia. Horrible though it is, stopping life as they know it for the next few months isn’t going to help much and quite possibly make them even more miserable, confused and lonely. DM would much rather go out and do as much as possible even if she’s at risk than fester in her room for months on end and if people are worried about using medical resources, well she has stated already that she would not want to be hospitalised or treated beyond pain relief.

But @inforthelonghaul a lot of those people at the party are 60-75 by the looks of it. So it's not just the 105 year old. They're all at it.

She may not be in ICU, but she will have care, an ambulance will be called, etc etc.

I don't want vulnerable elderly women to die in pain, drowning internally. Sorry if that makes me a dick.

I don’t either believe you me, and saying goodbye to my DM earlier this week because visits and trips out are no longer allowed was incredibly difficult. But I’m not sure why they don’t or shouldn’t have the right to decide or make the decision for themselves. If they lack capacity then ok but otherwise.......

I see threads about idiots going to second homes or carrying on as normal because they want to etc. I don’t agree and I think they’re stupid but no one is locking them in a room for their own good.
