Am I being selfish?

I’m A SAHM & OH works from home. I’ve been following the spread of the virus for a few weeks and knew it was going to be bad with our governments approach.

It was my birthday on Saturday and I cancelled my hotel, restaurant and pub visit and instead stayed inside. Everyone thought I was crazy but I knew we were heading for a wide spread.

I kept my child off school and nursery on Monday and have been in doors since. I probably took the precautions too early but I don’t want to risk it right now.

We’re fairly young but OH gets the flu jab as he has asthma so I want to be careful.

My sister has started a new job last week and they are not allowing her to work from home. She took her child out of nursery on Monday but expected him to come to me. I think she expects him to come to me for the foreseeable future.

But as she’s as work all day there’s a risk she could catch it, pass to her son and he passes to us so our attempts to self isolate are pointless.

Also her partner is being very relaxed about it all and still going to the gym.

Is it selfish for me not to look after my nephew?

Can your sister's partner not work from home/look after their child if she can't?

In the context of keeping yourself and your immediate family safe, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being 'selfish'. The over-use of this term is getting wearing.

InASense · 18/03/2020 18:55

Not selfish at all.

Well. Technically I suppose it is. But it sounds completely justified to me.

And like pp said, where is her partner?

Dramalamaindeed · 18/03/2020 18:55

Her partner isn’t the child’s dad and can’t work from home either. The child’s dad said he doesn’t know if he can help.

I feel selfish and people are sending messages saying be kind etc not directly towards me but it makes me feel unkind for saying no.

My mum has offered to help but she’s 60+ and also has asthma.

No, your sisters new place of work is being selfish, if you can work from home you should, that's government guidelines.

Knocksomesense · 18/03/2020 19:25

No. There would be no point you distancing if he could bring it to your house. Keep your household safe.

BogOffWinter · 18/03/2020 19:27

As pp said, no point distancing if you’re going to be looking after other people’s children who aren’t distancing themselves.

You’re not being selfish, you’re protecting your family. Better safe than sorry!

No, you're not being at all selfish. Your sister is being selfish not paying attention, not understanding your actions, and expectjng you to do this.

Not selfish, your reasoning is absolutely correct. No point self isolating if you bring an outside child in every day.
