So who else is still having to go to work despite it not being essential?

My job is not life or death. Nobody would suffer if I wasn't there - except for my bosses. I could work from home - but that would make the office look bad. So I'm still trekking in everyday on the train to my completely non-essential job.

Anyone else in this boat who would like to rant with me?

DH is and it’s totally ridiculous. He’s in a big organisation, could easily work from home but they can’t be arsed to implement it. He works in a 16 storey building that’s like a sauna. No one is doing any work as they’re all worried sick.

Also means I’m going to be stuck WFH with the kids next week, whereas if we were both here we could tag team childcare and work and actually be effective.

LittleLittleLittle · 18/03/2020 18:56

Well if you guys had to self-isolate for 2 weeks they would lose workers.

Simonsaysitschristmas · 18/03/2020 18:58

I honestly feel like these companies should be named and shamed. Why do they not think the government advice applies to them?

Daddypigsglasses · 18/03/2020 18:59

My DH works for an IT dept in for NHS England btw, not a big greedy multinational.

It’s fucking ridiculous.

Growingboys · 18/03/2020 19:01

No ofefnce @Daddypig but it sounds like your husband's job is pretty crucial right now!

Daddypigsglasses · 18/03/2020 19:02

Ha ha, it is, but it could totally 100 percent be done from home. He’s not on the front line, the systems he uses he has on a work laptop. He’s working at home right now. He’s just not allowed to 9-5!

SapphireSalute · 18/03/2020 19:03

i'm a retail manager, non food, but the footfall is insane!!

if we are open next week and children come in store it will be so unfair, already we have everyone traipsing in for stuff they want.....no thought for the staff facing more customers than ever

and half out workforce is off self isolating......and people have become even ruder!

Drivemybluecar · 18/03/2020 19:06

I’m a house keeper. Not something I can do from home. But as there are limited people in the house my exposure will be less

newmobile · 18/03/2020 19:06

Me! Could easily work from home and am not allowed. Lots of us on an over crowded office. Public Sector role so no one can make a decision lots of meetings about it though!

Emeeno1 · 18/03/2020 19:06

My 18 year-old works as a poker dealer for a large casino. They are still open and expecting all staff to show up for shifts which include close contact with numerous punters.

They know that gamblers will not stop coming until they are forcefully shut. It is all about money.

The family which own these casinos are worth billions.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 19:08

I don’t get this
Yes to naming and shaming

Ylvamoon · 18/03/2020 19:13

I will, it's not essential as in life and death BUT we have been told we are vital for the survival of the company... and with it the jobs that our colleagues realy on.

Spanielmadness · 18/03/2020 19:15

My DP runs the IT for a massive company. He can log in from home. He’s been told he must come into the office each day, although the sales staff are working from home. It’s totally stupid.......

Makegoodchoices · 18/03/2020 19:20

I’m have to go in or ‘volunteer’ for unpaid leave.
I’m starting to truly hate my company.
There is no need whatsoever for me to work in the office, I’ve worked from home many times before. It’s a cost cutting exercise as they’re betting that people with children will have to ‘volunteer’ when the schools close.

Bunnybigears · 18/03/2020 19:22

Me, admin in an accountancy firm, still going in to work no plans to allow working from home.
