Schools closed - can anyone answer this question about key worker

Imknackeredzzz · 18/03/2020 18:37

I have heard today the schools are closing except for those with children who are “key worker” my husband is a lift engineer in all environments from apartments/ supermarkets/ hospitals

Is he likely to be classed as one would you say?

OP posts:
Didiusfalco · 18/03/2020 20:15

Maybe, but if you let everyone who needed to work from home send their kids in to school you’d have a school-full which is not the fucking point.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/03/2020 20:16

And how is he actually going to work with dc under his role care?

Sharkyfan · 18/03/2020 20:35

@Didiusfalco I’m sort of with you there, but if I wasn’t a key worker we could share it.

I’m part time so I will be able to just about do my hours although worry he’ll leave the 4yo watching tv all the time. But I won’t be able to volunteer to do extra hours which I would have otherwise.

snowballer · 18/03/2020 20:39

And how is he actually going to work with dc under his role care?

I'll be doing just this. Most of my friends will be too. And I bet about a million other people Hmm

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 18/03/2020 20:43

Genuine question so please don’t jump on me! Are the Police classed as key workers? My best friend is a serving a Police Officer with school age children who will be in a mess when the school closes. I’ve offered to help where I can for her.

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 18/03/2020 20:50

I wonder how this will work for me as I am frontline nhs staff (HCSW in community nursing) DH is a structural engineer for argricultural buildings who largely works alone and has been told to continue working until told otherwise so I am stuck

StrawberryJam200 · 18/03/2020 20:52

Common sense needed here surely? Key workers are surely police, fire, armed forces, prison staff, ALL healthcare and support, social care, necessary infrastructure and manufacture of eg the new ventilators, undertakers (or equivalent) then food supply, and, I believe, whoever’s needed to keep the internet “alive”, at least for government use. There will be others but that’s what occurs to me.

cabbageking · 18/03/2020 20:53

Police are key workers and emergency services along with delivery people. Just waiting clarity about if this is delivering vital supplies like food, medicine etc and what evidence parents need to show.

cabbageking · 18/03/2020 20:56

FSM is not on our list of vulnerable children.

Whynotnowbaby · 18/03/2020 20:56

In Iceland teachers are counted as key workers (first time ever) so we can care for the children of front line workers. Our schools are open but subject to reduced hours and class sizes.

pinkkoala · 18/03/2020 20:58

I am single parent, dd lives with me, she is 15, i work as hca for private company just 2 nights a week, will she be made to go to school, she also has asthma, or will she be off as i am home every day. I know they are already planning lessons.

Honeybadger01 · 18/03/2020 20:58

I’m hoping that some council staff like bin men and so on will be classed as key workers or bin collections might start grinding to a halt!

feelinguseless101 · 18/03/2020 20:59

It's a government decision. Guidance will be issued tomorrow and until then, anything else is speculation.

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 18/03/2020 21:00

What do you do you work as ? Sorry if I missed this ? Not being goady

feelinguseless101 · 18/03/2020 21:02

pinkkoala if she has been hospitalised at any point for her asthma then she is classed as a vulnerable group and should self isolate.

If she hasn't been hospitalised for her asthma then she isn't in a vulnerable group and should go to school IF it's open. It is highly likely that those classed as key workers, who are entitled to the child care, will be asked whether it is needed. If it isn't then you won't use it. This is to reduce the number of places required to relieve pressure.

kimlo · 18/03/2020 21:05

@pinkkoala no one will be made to go in, it's for keyworkers who have no other child care option to keep them working.

Will an eyp be classed as a keyworker? I'm assuming I'll need childcare to go and look after keyworkers children. But I also need the wrap around care to be open.

DippyAvocado · 18/03/2020 21:06

I think it might be up to individual schools to decide, based on:

a) number of DC they are confident they can reliably look after
b) number of vulnerable/FSM pupils
c) numbers of other parents requesting places for their DC with their reasons, and having a panel (?) to rank the responses. There will have to be central guidance, but final decision needs to be local

Schools can't make these decisions. It would cause no end of aggro if neighbouring schools had different lists. There will have to be a definitive list from the government.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/03/2020 21:06

Wonder if those teachers and TAs doing the essential childcare will be told to bro g their dc with them.

Ladyglitterfairydust · 18/03/2020 21:08

@Musicalmistress I really hope teachers are key workers. We’re a 2 teacher household too. If we’re not I’m going to have to say to school that Me and dh will have to take it in turns to stay at home with the kids or bring them in with us. If they want teachers in (which I don’t mind at all) then we need somewhere to send our own kids.

WTFdidwedo · 18/03/2020 21:09

The schools opening to key workers will be opening 8am until 5pm, not normal school hours. There are a few websites speculating on who's included, here's one list which is probably correct www.hulldailymail.co.uk/news/education/key-workers-uk-schools-closed-3963050

pinkkoala · 18/03/2020 21:11

Feelingusless, no i don't need her to go in as i am here all day, and no not been hospitalised with asthma. But i thought they may as still classed as key worker. Unbelievably, she actually wants to go in.

tashakg89 · 18/03/2020 21:13

I think il be classed as a key worker but it's shift work and I'm only there two days top through the week, wonder if il have to send them full time or just when I'm at work.

kimlo · 18/03/2020 21:17

@WTFdidwedo acording to that list if it's right it looks like I would be counted as a keyworker.

DippyAvocado · 18/03/2020 21:26

The schools opening to key workers will be opening 8am until 5pm

Teachers will need some provision for being able to pick up and drop off their own kids at 8/5. Would be a lot easier if they could come in with me.

pinkazing · 18/03/2020 21:32

With childminders being closed as well this is going to be an tough time, plenty of juggling. Friend’s in meltdown as to what she will do. He also mentioned delivery drivers, but looking forward to getting clarification tomorrow,
