So how is all this ‘open only for key workers’ thing going to work then?

Really is doesn’t seem to mean anything.

I can’t really teach a random selection of children.

That is the ting - we are like a beehive in modern society - almost everyone is a key worker. Might as well have kept the schools open in my view.

FlamingoAndJohn · 18/03/2020 20:21

Why would children with cognition and learning, communication and interaction or social and emotional EHCPs have underlying health conditions?

Because sometimes but not always the two go hand in hand.

I love the denigration of childcare work on this thread.

lyralalala · 18/03/2020 20:23

@exLtEveDallas They mentioned several times it's likely to be a small number of children so less staff will be needed. Then when they combine schools, which they clearly intend to do when they said not all schools will have to be open all of the time, they'll be able to pool resources like kitchen and cleaning staff so that the fewest number of staff can deal with the best number of children

exLtEveDallas · 18/03/2020 20:23

And as for the ‘children with social workers’ - well tbh ours were the first ones to Self Isolate - it was simply a good excuse to keep them off.

FlamingoAndJohn · 18/03/2020 20:24

I love the denigration of childcare work on this thread.

I have nothing but respect for people who work in child care. I can teach all day long but I can’t manage childcare!

OP posts:
Lianepl · 18/03/2020 20:25

Precisely.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 20:26

There is lots of denigration of childcare as "glorified babysitting".
I know lots of people secretly do look down on childcare workers though.

PestyMachtubernahme · 18/03/2020 20:27

DH has been asked to and has, signed up as an emergency teacher. His HT emailed everyone they thought suitable today. He may stay at his school are be placed elsewhere.

Has no one else had this?

I presume most kids in school will be going through the same work packs that the kids at home will have.

ghostyslovesheets · 18/03/2020 20:28

I doubt it's going to be enforced - as in parents choosing not to use it being fined ffs - but children with an EHCP have legal rights - which are being honoured, LAC need the stability of school and you all need people to staff shops, drive food and treat the sick

Teachers are being paid to be in school - like us social work staff- PEP's will need to take place some how for example - statutory requirement - can't do that without school input

Obviously those at risk and ill need to be off or cautious but this is new territory and maybe we all need to be thinking about wider society and the needs of vulnerable kids and vital workers?

Toddlerteaplease · 18/03/2020 20:28

Huge relief on my ward this evening that my colleagues children can still go to school. It would have caused us a huge problem if schools closed completely.

SusanBland · 18/03/2020 20:28

Teachers aren't allowed to be worried about or discuss the logistics or impact of any of this with eachother, as the people who do not work in education keep telling us on a topic specifically called 'The Staffroom'.

AriadnesFilament · 18/03/2020 20:28

When I told her about going to a new school, she said "O.k mum"

This has had me in absolute bits. You and your daughter are heroes.

ghostyslovesheets · 18/03/2020 20:29

@PestyMachtubernahme they where talking tonight on R5 about the need for retired teachers and those who'd left to come back and offer hours as well

TSSDNCOP · 18/03/2020 20:31

I’m a fully vetted school admin worker, I’m going to sign up. I can clean and cook if necessary. This is one of those moments when those that can, should.

Stilllivinghere · 18/03/2020 20:34

Fuck you Boris. I'm not glorified childcare, thanks. I signed up to educate - not be babysitting other people's children through a pandemic that is rapidly spreading. I have vulnerable people in my family and as long as I'm having to go into school every day, dealing with children - maybe strange children by the look of it - who may or may not be carrying a virus, I cannot take care of my elderly parents - and I'm possibly bringing back Coronavirus to my own family.

I’m a nurse, I do planned care no where near the frontline. Who knows where I’ll end up... Wherever I’m needed. 🤷‍♀️

Theredjellybean · 18/03/2020 20:35

@SusanBland

Of course you can be worried about it and discuss it.. But your being asked to do something that frankly your paid and trained to do.. In a time of national crisis so other professionals can go to do their jobs.
I am stunned by the teachers complaining about this.
I am a doctor, I have a vulnerable dsd at home...and doctors are all being asked to work outside of their normal roles in many ways, I am not coming on here mentioning unions, and stating I am not going to go to work and potentially put my family at risk.

Are all you teachers with the me first attitude going to be OK when there is no hcp at work to help you because they are at home looking after their children.. The same children you felt you couldn't supervise for a few hours a day?

Inkpaperstars · 18/03/2020 20:37

I hope that they remember to add those that keep, the electricity, water etc going to the list of key workers.

letsdothisoneanon · 18/03/2020 20:37

"Given the choice between propping up Britain and keeping my own family safe, sadly I would prefer to prioritise my family."

Unfortunately with that attitude Britain is fucked and your family are most likely dead anyway.

Remember when everyone was saying "For the many, not the few"? Now is the time to live that.

clopper · 18/03/2020 20:40

I think it’s a good solution to partially open some schools. I’m a primary teacher without small children and am not looking after elderly relatives. I’m happy to volunteer to help doctors nurses, Carers of the elderly, shop workers etc. attend work. Maybe supply teachers may also be happy to do so to avoid a long period without pay? It’s a worrying situation all round but we all have to do what we can to help.

Abbyd222 · 18/03/2020 20:41

@timeforanotherchange how selfish

ghostyslovesheets · 18/03/2020 20:41

I'll move from PT to FT to cover colleagues - we have also been asked to list our transferable skills so I could be deployed around the council - I am classed as 'at risk' but will still be working - keeping vulnerable kids safer, making sure foster carers are supported etc

it's time to bloody step up and help not moan and stamp your feet

morethanmeetstheeye · 18/03/2020 20:42

I'm very concerned about looking after the children of key workers, if I'm being really honest. There are so many reports of NHS workers clamouring for more testing to ensure their own safety/check they don't have the virus and that they don't all have the right safety equipment.

Then if supermarket staff are included in this, they are dealing with anyone and everyone, which puts them in a really vulnerable position.

Whilst I want to do my utmost to help carry on education, I have a young family and two of us have asthma (mild/moderate), so I really want to protect them.

Theredjellybean · 18/03/2020 20:43

@letsdothisoneanon

Well said... And I really don't think supervising a small minority of children so key workers can continue working is propping up Britain..
So whoever said that...remember when you are ringing nhs 111 or an ambulance or in itu.. If you have no one there to answer the phone, drive the ambulance or work your ventilator.. Its cus we heeded what you said and decided we weren't propping up selfish individuals like yourself

cjpark · 18/03/2020 20:45

You are trained and get paid to teach. I suspect teachers will be 'key workers' and you'll be able to take your DC to school with you. My DH and I are NHS workers - DC will be going to be looked after by people like yourself whilst we go to work and risk infection. Be thankful you will be working 9-3 with less pupils and not many more hours and workload as in the NHS
