To not social distance

katedan · 18/03/2020 17:07

I have a congenital heart defect and as a result have been advised to self isolate and work from home. I am a children's social worker and this will mean not doing home visits which will put additional strain on my colleagues and will be difficult for the children I work with. I am fit and healthy and run marathons so do not consider myself to have an underlying health condition. Obv if I had symptoms or any family I visit disclosed they had symptoms I would not visit but AIBU to not take this advice but continue to be extra vigilant.

Um, tell that to the 45year old with under control motor neurone disease who died yesterday. Or the 21yr old footballer overseas with undiagnosed leukemia who died 3 days ago.

saoirse31 · 18/03/2020 17:14

No one on an internet forum can answer your question seriously. Talk to your consultant. Personally with no medical knowledge I'd think you were crazy but each to their own.

TheQueef · 18/03/2020 17:15

Go for it then you are obviously so special the advice doesn't apply it's just for the thick people.....

OhLook · 18/03/2020 17:15

Do you have a family or children?

tulippa · 18/03/2020 17:16

Yabu.

ThunderPython · 18/03/2020 17:16

You clearly know better than the government and NHS advisory peeps. Knock yourself out.

solarisbabe · 18/03/2020 17:16

The type of families who are needing regular social worker visits are not all going to be the type of families who would disclose that they have had symptoms.

Princessfaffalot · 18/03/2020 17:18

YABVU unless of course you want to die a miserable painful death. The guide lines are there for a reason, do you need them translated or do you have some sort of super power that makes you exempt? The government are issuing instructions to keep you alive. Listen. Ffs.

BossAssBitch · 18/03/2020 17:20

You must know YABVU Hmm

MagnoliaJustice · 18/03/2020 17:24

I would self-isolate. You may feel fantastically healthy but please don't risk it.

drspouse · 18/03/2020 17:26

Can't you take on everyone's admin instead? They'll love you to bits!

thepeopleversuswork · 18/03/2020 17:27

You know YABU. I sympathise as its a dreadful position to be in but you know perfectly well that you're putting yourself and others at risk.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 18/03/2020 17:29

If you have been advised to self isolate, you self isolate.

Your determination to ignore advice renders this post pretty pointless.

WayTooBloodyTired · 18/03/2020 17:33

I'm asthmatic and have an immunity issue and I'm stuck caring for people showing symptoms because we're so understaffed. I am terrified. Put yourself first.

BeansOnToast4T · 18/03/2020 17:34

Of course, you should self isolate! My child social worker is not making house calls now.
If you do get it you are at a much higher risk of ending up on a ventilator, and there are NOT ENOUGH to go round. Protect yourself and leave that ventilator free for someone else..........the mother who has complications after childbirth or the teenager with meningitis etc

Findawaytobehappy · 18/03/2020 17:35

Don’t ask here. Everyone is hysterical.

midgebabe · 18/03/2020 17:37

Everyone here isn't hysterical, they are despairing and frustrated at people who put doctors and nurses at risk

Abracad · 18/03/2020 17:38

Depends. Are you happy to decline an ICU bed and ventilator if you get ill so that someone who has acted for the good of their community can use it? If so, knock yourself out. No? Thought not. Grow up and stay at home.

Wildthyme · 18/03/2020 17:39

Um, tell that to the 45year old with under control motor neurone disease who died yesterday. Or the 21yr old footballer overseas with undiagnosed leukemia who died 3 days ago.

My heartstrings are tugging.

RuggerHug · 18/03/2020 17:39

Pick it up from child one, pass it on to every other child you see. Great idea.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 18/03/2020 17:39

Obv if I had symptoms or any family I visit disclosed they had symptoms I would not visit

And what about the people who don’t bother to disclose symptoms and you only find out after you’ve been sat there for 10 mins & someone comes coughing into the room?
The NHS is going to be under enough pressure without you blatantly ignoring the advice and adding to it.

Marshmallow91 · 18/03/2020 17:40

@Findawaytobehappy tell that to the families of all the people who have died. Its people like you who minimise a PANDEMIC that spread the illness.

Lightofthephoenix · 18/03/2020 17:42

drspouse

Can't you take on everyone's admin instead? They'll love you to bits!

That is a very good idea

withlotsoflove · 18/03/2020 17:44

The two mentioned above *did have underlying health conditions though... Sad

DivGirl · 18/03/2020 17:44

I'm meant to social distance if we go by the "invited for a flu jab" test. But I won't be - technically yes I have an autoimmune condition, but unless CV comes with cake I think I've got as much chance as anyone my age of being fine. (This is currently a moot point as both me and my DC are self-isolating for the next fortnight).

It's your own life, only you can choose what to do.
