The 'vulnerable' conditions..

Is anyone else a bit confused about these?

DH has Crohn's disease (also mild asthma but not using an inhaler as been OK for years) Is on methotrexate and humira

I think he may have had the virus already as was ill a few weeks ago and had a nasty chest infection, but unsure as they wouldn't test him

there is a mention of the immune suppressed e.g. after chemo but nothing about the drugs he is on.

Anyone share some light? he is working from home mainly anyway.

Thanks

Doesn't crohn's affect immune system? If so then yes he is vulnerable.

BovaryX · 18/03/2020 16:59

The vulnerable conditions are listed below. They include chronic pre existing conditions such as diabetes and respiratory disease. Many of those with these conditions are eligible for the annual flu shot, which is why that was mentioned.

Mum has colitis and is on similar meds. She definitely qualifies as high risk because of the meds.

Orangeblossom78 · 18/03/2020 17:01

Ok, yes he gets a free flu jab. Thanks.

Yes. Does get a free flu jab? Then yes. DH is in a similar situation. He emailed his IBD nurse who said even if infected don’t stop meds unless he needs to be admitted to hospital in which case discuss with doctors.

juneybean · 18/03/2020 17:03

The girl at work with crohn's takes immunosuppressants so have advised her to stay home.

ArkAtEee · 18/03/2020 17:05

Hi. I have Crohn's and am on azathioprine which is a similar drug. My clinic rang yesterday and advised me that I am considered vulnerable. I was also advised to continue my medication because of the risk of flare-up/relapse. If that were to happen, I would be treated with steroids, which would make me more vulnerable. Plus there is a question around capacity to treat other conditions at the moment. I also have type 1 diabetes, which complicates things, but the Crohn's stuff alone would put your DH in the vulnerable category.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2020 17:08

Your Dh is immune supresses the immune system your Dh is vulnerable he is wise to work from home.

That's tough, Crohn's and Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 is a tough road to hoe on its own. Hope you keep well, it's a real bummer for everyone, but particularly tough for those with an underlying condition.

ArkAtEee · 18/03/2020 17:25

Thanks Bovary. I am working from home as does DP so now schools are closing that reduces disease pathways Smile

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 18/03/2020 17:28

i’m on methotrexate for arthritis and my thyroid is beyond fucked. i had the free flu and pneumonia jab last year.

i guess i’m indoors for the foreseeable then?

it would be good to get some actual concrete advice on ‘vulnerable’ groups. i assume this will happen in the coming days?

BovaryX · 18/03/2020 17:30

Stay safe. These are grim times and sadly I think things will get worse before they get better. Take care everyone.

AnguaResurgam · 18/03/2020 17:37

If someone gets a flu jab, and falls roughly into one of the listed categories, then the safe course of action is to act as if in the vulnerable 'shield' group, unless/until one of their medical team advises otherwise

Orangeblossom78 · 19/03/2020 14:15

What is the advice on the meds just to continue as normal? Thanks

OP posts:
yikesanotherbooboo · 19/03/2020 14:27

Signpost him to crohns and colitis uk where there is advice. In a nutshell he should continue his meds now , keep abreast of any advice specific to his medications and isolate himself for 3 months or until guidance changes.

Lillyhatesjaz · 19/03/2020 14:31

I have addisons and I have been sent a letter by the hospital with details of extra precautions I need to take

Petiolaris · 19/03/2020 14:34

Technically I’m vulnerable. But DH’s employer doesn’t give a shit and I can’t isolate while he’s still going to work. Measures aren’t helpful unless they’re also extended to those who live with vulnerable people 🤷‍♀️

5zeds · 19/03/2020 14:36

What happens to employers who don’t let vulnerable stay home
