Obvs I'm not a doctor, but given that the virus can affect lungs/heart/guts badly or lightly, I'm presuming the same for kidneys
I'm not a medical person, and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but this is how I understand the various articles on it I've read
The virus mostly attacks the lungs but a viral infection can cause secondary infections, such as a bacterial infection, in the lungs and other organs, due to a weakened immune system. Also if someone is extremely unwell it can cause other organs to fail, due to lack of oxygen or inflammation etc. This I think is more like a side effect than a direct cause.
But what the articles seem to be saying is the virus can attack other organs directly.
The virus has a protein, one of the smaller spikes I think, that targets the cell. Our cells have something called ACE2 receptors, a doorway if you like. The tiny terror virus has the key to this doorway and that's the route for the beggar to get in. What they are saying is that these receptors are not just in the airways and lungs but also in other parts of the body, so the virus can directly get in that way as well and begin its dreadful task. Though it might be less likely to take that route, it is possible.
They think the reason younger people do not suffer as much with the virus is because their ACE2 receptors are not as numerous or are underdeveloped. So the virus has a harder job to get into the cell in the first place
Thisbis just my undertaking though and I might got it confused. Maybe someone else with medical knowledge could explain it better
OP glad to hear your DH is well on the road to recovery. Stay safe too
