Unusual coronavirus symptoms
SparklesAllOver · 18/03/2020 16:39
DH woke up this morning feeling ill - fever, slight cough and in agony with lower back pain. Called GP who told him that the virus can affect the kidneys, hence the lower back pain. Told him to take paracetamol for it and isolation for the family for 14 days. DH is in alot of pain, unlike him to complain, and I am worried but don't want to bother the already busy NHS. Does anyone else have this symptom?
dementedpixie · 18/03/2020 17:09
Surely he could have a kidney infection unrelated to coronavirus
SparklesAllOver · 18/03/2020 17:37
Nope, GP said the virus can go to the kidneys, I have never seen him so ill.
SparklesAllOver · 18/03/2020 17:38
Doc said this is detailed on C-19 Symptoms diagram, it is but no words next to it.
dementedpixie · 18/03/2020 17:40
So no antibiotics given in case it is kidney infection? Just fobbed off with paracetamol?
dementedpixie · 18/03/2020 17:45
I've just read how it can affect kidneys too. If he is in significant pain then I'd call 111
SallyWD · 18/03/2020 17:47
I know it can affect the kidneys but what if your DH has a kidney infection or kidney stones? You can't just leave that untreated. It can be dangerous.
PhoneLock · 18/03/2020 17:55
My husband had the same. It is just starting to ease off after 6 days.
SparklesAllOver · 18/03/2020 18:16
Thank you, DH has no history of kidney stones/disease, I will see how he gets on tonight.
halcyondays · 18/03/2020 18:21
Maybe they should be doing a urine test.He should stick to paracetamol and avoid ibuprofen.
SallyWD · 19/03/2020 07:12
Hope he's OK. Just to say you don't need a history of kidney stones or disease to get a kidney infection. It can happen to anyone, very common.
Pinkiii · 19/03/2020 07:14
Please ring GP back. kidney infections have very similar symptoms to a flu which has similar symtpoms to corona. Better to rule that out.
SparklesAllOver · 19/03/2020 08:47
DH has had an ok night, headache abated a little but still in pain with back, fevers are worse, he is wet through. He has fallen asleep again, will call dr when he wakes.
fuzzyKitty · 25/04/2020 23:26
SparklesAllOver hope your DH has recovered OK. I've had similar bad kidney pain and virus symptoms. Just wondering if your DH still has any kidney pain? My GP doesn't believe my kidney pain is anything to do with virus!
Flaxmeadow · 25/04/2020 23:34
Yes it seems it can affect the kidneys but I'm surprised your GP didn't prescribe antibiotics as well, because even if it is coronavirus i would think a secondary bacterial infection might also happen because the immune system is weakened?

I had what I thought was intense gallbladder pain; puked every 30 minutes all night for more than 6 hours and couldn't keep anything down, no painkillers or water. Pain migrated downwards in the following 18 hours to lower stomach and was so bad I couldn't roll over in bed without being in agony . No fever or cough though so told not coronavirus. I was in bed for nearly 5 days, completely wiped out. No idea what it was.
Flaxmeadow · 25/04/2020 23:37
...sorry, just noticed the thread was started in March. Hope everything turned out OK for you all OP.
fuzzyKitty · 26/04/2020 07:04
Babamamananarama that sound awful, I hope you've recovered OK.
flaxmeadow thanks for the link, when I suggested to my GP that the virus had affected my kidneys, he basically scoffed and said I'd have to be much sicker in ICU for that to happen. So I guess I'm asking for people's experiences of milder kidney issues.
Obvs I'm not a doctor, but given that the virus can affect lungs/heart/guts badly or lightly, I'm presuming the same for kidneys. I don't know how to persuade GP to take that theory more seriously - maybe to check with his colleagues to see if anyone has reported similar symptoms. I'm assuming referring me isn't going to happen ATM.
Frompcat · 26/04/2020 07:13
It is much more likely to be a kidney infection and they should have given him antibiotics for it.
SparklesAllOver · 26/04/2020 07:44
Hi flaxmeadow, WhyNotMe40, DH recovered well, thank you, although he is still having problems breathing properly and gets puffed out quickly. Wish everyone a speedy recovery, hope all your families stay safe and well.

I'm not a medical person, and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but this is how I understand the various articles on it I've read
The virus mostly attacks the lungs but a viral infection can cause secondary infections, such as a bacterial infection, in the lungs and other organs, due to a weakened immune system. Also if someone is extremely unwell it can cause other organs to fail, due to lack of oxygen or inflammation etc. This I think is more like a side effect than a direct cause.
But what the articles seem to be saying is the virus can attack other organs directly.
The virus has a protein, one of the smaller spikes I think, that targets the cell. Our cells have something called ACE2 receptors, a doorway if you like. The tiny terror virus has the key to this doorway and that's the route for the beggar to get in. What they are saying is that these receptors are not just in the airways and lungs but also in other parts of the body, so the virus can directly get in that way as well and begin its dreadful task. Though it might be less likely to take that route, it is possible.
They think the reason younger people do not suffer as much with the virus is because their ACE2 receptors are not as numerous or are underdeveloped. So the virus has a harder job to get into the cell in the first place
Thisbis just my undertaking though and I might got it confused. Maybe someone else with medical knowledge could explain it better
OP glad to hear your DH is well on the road to recovery. Stay safe too
