People who can’t work from home

Was doing a bit of reading, it would seem many of those who cannot work from home are in the lowest paid jobs, statistically.

I wonder how those people are going to cope or reduce their risk.

I’m not in the top earning bracket myself, but can wfh and am financially safe. This info is really depressing, however, and I am concerned about how the uk government will address it

This is a screenshot of the stats, although I think this particular site is US-centric.

It’s tough. In my office we have all been told we can work from home if we are able to ie have a computer and internet and they are looking at providing laptops for those who don’t have them. But a few people in our office don’t have Internet and of course they are the lower paid ones who have to come in for the time being.

I think the percentage of people who are most at risk of losing their entire livelihoods here are being largely ignored.

Even discussion on MN is mostly centred around wfh as a simple thing to do - as if people who aren’t doing it are irresponsible.

Yet if food couldn’t be delivered or sold.......

I often wonder if poverty isn’t actually common in the uk, and that most of the uk is very well off.

DH works in construction - drives a loading shovel on a building site. Not exactly a WFH job Grin He also has COPD. Unless he has symptoms, or the NHS tell him not to work, he won't get SSP. My only income is Carer's Allowance. Therefore, he goes to work. On the pisitive side, he's effectively isolated in the shovel and isn't going in the mess room at break times.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 18/03/2020 15:51

Positive not pisitive. No, I haven't been drinking!

I am a support worker of younger adults who have learning difficulties/challenging behaviour. Obviously unable to work from home. It's worrying.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/03/2020 15:54

Low paid worker here who can't WFH. Single parent too so only one income. And I have a 6 year old so when schools close I'm fucked.

Guess I'll have to apply for benefits. I get working tax credit at the moment but if I'm not working that will go.

I work in a petrol station, we will most definitely be staying open throughout all of this, we have to, we have emergency services that fill up here. Safe to say we are right in the firing line.

Forgone90 · 18/03/2020 16:01

Low paid worker here and work in an airport.... im screwed!

BoswellsBollocks · 18/03/2020 16:01

DH works for a builders’ merchant.

They’re really busy at work at the mo and it doesn’t seem to be letting up. He can’t work from home and is still dealing with loads of people face to face.

I’m a retail manager. I’m actually off on annual leave at the mo but I’m fully expecting to be back at work as normal on Monday. It’s a fashion store so not exactly a much needed service but we’ll still be expected to open unless something changes in the meantime.

Rowgtfc72 · 18/03/2020 16:02

Minimum wage, work in a food factory.
Weve been told we'll be in whatever.
Fortunately dd is old enough to be home alone if the schools close.

My friend works at airbus, he can hardly build the wings in his house.

I really would like to see a thread that give important information- correct aswell about how to apply for benefits

Council tax reduction/relief should be claimed for ASAP, it can be claimed for before you actually finish work

Council tax - telephone or email asking for a break in payments or better still a reduced amount, but let them know if you want to change your instalments as it’s important to communicate by phone or email

Universal credit - apply on line but timings are important and hopefully someone can explain this as I can’t

If you get paid after claiming UC I think it can cancel your claim ???

I’m a pubworker and for now my pub is open, but I have severe asthma that sometimes warrants hospital admission when I get a cold.

My lovely boss has put me on holiday pay for now. I’m hoping some other provision will kick in at some point or i’m fucked. I’m a single mum of two.
