Coronavirus - can work really make me use my holiday time as quarantine?

So - nasty cough and got tested for CV yesterday. I suspect it's just a nasty cold (genuinely, the symptoms are not bad at all) but I'm waiting the required 48 hours and I'm shut away in my bedroom.
My office is allowing people to work remotely. I'm trying to get set up on my laptop but it's now day 2 and the I.T. dept is overwhelmed. So I literally can't work.
My team leader has said I can use sick leave (only have 3 days sick leave a year - I've used up 2 days looking after son with gastro) or I'll have to use my holiday entitlement for this. I only get 10 days holiday a year (I live in North America, so this is normal).
I'm gutted with this idea. I was wanting to come back to the UK next year to see family (ailing mother-in-law) and so every day of vacation time is precious.
It seems I'm being punished for (a) declaring I may have coronavirus (b) the IT team being overwhelmed.
I know I'm being moany and there are worse problems out there, it's just i'm desperate to come back to the UK to see family and only being able to come for approximately a week just doesn't seem enough.
How should I approach this with work? I'd be very happy to have these quarantine days unpaid if that would save my vacation time...

Here in the UK you would get a choice between going on Statutory Sick Pay of £90.50 per week or using up holiday. I can't answer for the US as your employment laws are different.

If you are in Canada you probably fall under the 14 day quarantine legislation which is being drafted, and you don’t need a sick note. They pay you.
If you are in US you are probably hooped.

Thanks guys. That's nice advice and really useful. I think I needed to vent a bit. I'm going to wait till all the dust settles and then speak to HR using those pieces of info and cobble an argument together as to why using vacation time for this is crappy. Smile

The greatest joy is that both my under 10s are off school as well, DP at work so the kids are going feral downstairs watching 1000 hours of youtube videos about random gamers.

If you're in the US then legislation is being drafted but who knows who will be exempted?

Thanks. I'm in Canada, I probably should make that clear now.

We have a mix of UK and USA type work laws. Crap holiday allowance, but free healthcare! So who knows what this will mean... they are making things up day to day, which at least shows a good bit of flexibility.

At least you are getting tested . Rarely happens here so could end up isolating a couple times if few in family for other illness as just can't be sited

Easilyanxious · 18/03/2020 14:20

Can't be sure I mean .

ICouldHaveDancedAllNight · 18/03/2020 14:23

@Easilyanxious. That's a fair point! Yes, I was really impressed by how the testing was handled yesterday. I was given a sick note, good instructions. It was all pretty efficient.
It's why I feel a bit moany complaining. I'm just quite homesick feeling so far away from family in Scotland... especially with all this going on. It sounds crazy but I almost feel like puking with how much I wish I was with my family now. But, my husband is from Canada and I can see the benefits of remaining here, but sometimes it feels too hard and I feel very alone.

I can imagine , being away from family is hard at the best of times . Let alone at times like this . Hoping your feeling better really soon . But having to take holiday seems very unfair , it’s certainly not a holiday .

ICouldHaveDancedAllNight · 18/03/2020 14:40

Thanks @Easilyanxious. That's kind. I think that may have actually been the point of this venting - that I simply feel too far away from my family at times. I'm right in the middle of Canada and it takes at least a day to get from one place to the other. So holiday is really tight.

My Team Leader said 'well I had to look after my family who had gastro when we were on vacation' to me when I queried using up vacation time for this.
But surely there's a difference between going on holiday and getting ill and then using your holiday time because you're quarrantined?
