Am I the only one not pleased that schools are closing?

I understand that the government consider this necessary and I know it's about saving lives, possibly mine.

But please tell me I'm not the only who feels a deep dread at us all being home? I could cry. Until the summer. How.

Also I've previously posted this elsewhere but I'm frontline NHS and my DH can't work from hone. Both grans are happy to look after my DS but they're over 70. What the hell do I do?

GulliBelle · 18/03/2020 14:19

I'm just waiting for the Daily Mail type 'feral kids roaming the streets ' headlines.

“I’m not! Do they honestly think people are going to teach their kids at home. I have to work from home, it’s one or the other”

No. The vast majority of schools and colleges have been working extremely hard putting online teaching systems in place for some time. There is no reason for children to fall behind and this will create a level playing field with those many thousands of vulnerable children already forced to stay at home.

gwenneh · 18/03/2020 14:19

*Wait until all the smug mums start posting on social media about how wonderful it is that the kids are home and how today we spent hours playing card games, cooked a delicious vegan lunch, and spent hours researching about Tang Dynasties.

Seriously, it's coming!!*

Hi from the US, where we have been distance learning since last week as a result of schools shutting.

It is a total nightmare, having to be a teacher for two separate years with equally demanding workloads, PLUS work from home, PLUS be a parent to a newborn.

And yes, Karen is posting her usual bullshit. We're on day 3 and I already want to strangle her.

Lifeisabeach09 · 18/03/2020 14:20

So schools in Scotland and Wales are closing but not the far more populated England.
What's the rationale...anyone know?

crackofdoom · 18/03/2020 14:21

scruffyoak Yes, the reality for most of us will be "ENDURE family time".

peoplepleaser1 · 18/03/2020 14:22

I have been listening to PMQs and all bulletins. There has been no confirmation about schools in England, but hints that an announcement will be made today.

Also no mention of how long school closures will last for.

Please people be careful posting non factual stuff. It causes so much confusion.

@trumpisaflump

I would assume that families like yours are behind the "Schools will have a new purpose" comment.

I run a volunteer playscheme, afterschool care and breakfast club and was approached 2 weeks ago to see if, in the case of schools closing, would be be willing to run for longer hours and for more days (we normally run 10-4 for a week at Easter). We could, we don't have the volunteer capacity for that. I assume other people/places were also approached.

oldwhyno · 18/03/2020 14:23

Of course you're not the only one dreading it, it's going to be really really tough. I feel unbelievably grateful that we have a garden now, and really sorry for those that don't.

I am really happy Boris isn't rushing to close schools and I hope he shows similar strength if/when the time comes to begin general self-isolation. If the schools are closed in our area next week, we will be making the most of what we can do within the guidelines, because general self-isolation will be significantly add to the difficulties.

lyralalala · 18/03/2020 14:24

@Lifeisabeach09 Gavin Williamson is making a statement at 5pm

I think it's probably just that the Scottish and Welsh daily updates are timed for lunchtime whereas the English one seems to be at the end of the day

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/03/2020 14:24

Just announced: Statement from Education Secretary at 5pm

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 18/03/2020 14:27

No lie, I will be taking my DD out, very much for the sake of our wellbeing.

Do you mean out of school or out of the house? If out of the house, what about other people's well-being?

withlotsoflove · 18/03/2020 14:28

If it’s six months, l feel very worried for the yr6 students! They’ll be flung straight into yr7 in secondary school. Zero preparation.

Homkaismycat · 18/03/2020 14:28

I think I will be a full alcoholic after this.. that’s if I survive it.

Lifeisabeach09 · 18/03/2020 14:28

I'll watch for it, thanks @lyralalala.

trumpisaflump · 18/03/2020 14:29

@lyralalala thanks

Squigglypig2 · 18/03/2020 14:30

I'm dreading prospect of WFH with a 2 year old and 9 year old. My DH will also be WFH and we will muddle through but really feel for the single parents who are going to have to do both.

oldwhyno · 18/03/2020 14:30

"If out of the house, what about other people's well-being?"

FFS, there's no indication yet that school's closing will coincide with general lockdown! Get a grip people.

Cheeseandwin5 · 18/03/2020 14:30

It is difficult, although I suppose, if you can be positive it could be a rewarding time.

Sadly we do need to stop the spread of the virus and it seems these methods are working across europe.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 18/03/2020 14:31

I have 2 of my own at primary school and I'm a childminder, so I will have at least 4, but up to 6 kids in my little house every day, for God knows how long. I may go mad.

GA2012 · 18/03/2020 14:31

I can totally understand why schools need to close but yes I am dreading it. Dc have autism. The holidays are hard enough and this will be harder! Not looking forward to it at all!

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 18/03/2020 14:31

Wonder when us in NI will find out anything.

LoveYorkshire · 18/03/2020 14:32

OMG! I'm the same. Honestly. I'm pregnant and have a 2 and 4 year old.
The 4 year old spending 3 hours/day at school is enough to give me a break and somewhere safe he can use his energy.

There's so much running around I can do at home until they tire me out. Yet, they never get tired. Sad

Good luck Flowers

kingkuta · 18/03/2020 14:32

Does noone work on here?
How do we go to work if grandparents cant look after the kids and they're not in school?
