People still going to pubs ...selfish ?

poolpoolt · 18/03/2020 12:36

So Boris advises staying away from large gatherings (pubs, restaurants ) etc
Yet pubs near me (Wetherspoons etc ) are packed today.
Last night people out celebrating st Patrick's day.
Is telling people to avoid it any use ?

Of course it’s not.
There’s a huge number of people who either think this is nothing, that it won’t affect them, who simply don’t care or who are selfish, ignorant idiots.

PumpkinP · 18/03/2020 12:39

It’s their choice really

Connie222 · 18/03/2020 12:39

Makes my blood boil to be honest.

MrsAJ27 · 18/03/2020 12:40

People have choices, Boris should have shut them all down if he didn't want ppl to go.

His own father said he would still be going to the Pub!

HonestlyItsFine · 18/03/2020 12:41

Yes, it is.
The government need to step in and order all these places to close and outright ban gatherings of more than 5-10 people.
Clearly, people don't care enough to do it themselves. So the government need to force it.

Morgan12 · 18/03/2020 12:42

Its lack of guidance.

People aren't taking this as seriously as they should because it appears the government aren't either.

poolpoolt · 18/03/2020 12:43

I went to Tesco today and in the shopping centre (where Tesco is ) was packed with people sitting in Costa, sitting in greggs cafe.
Shopping in primark etc
All this cancelling events seems pointless now if people aren't going to avoid the other things.

@PumpkinP Rubbish - if their actions in terms of getting the virus (or increasing likelihood exposure to A&E potentially) means the NHS is made worse for everyone else then they need to be compelled not asked what to do (i.e close pubs)

The scenes from Liverpool last night due to St Patrick's - packed out pubs with people chanting "fuck corona!" were obscene. Also as if the police need the extra pressure of policing pissed up crowds also.

poolpoolt · 18/03/2020 12:45

Are all pubs in Ireland closed?
And what about shops etc ?

OP posts:
PumpkinP · 18/03/2020 12:46

I don’t agree with it but it is their choice. Unless they close then people will still go

nellodee · 18/03/2020 12:47

Well, considering the government spent the first few weeks saying that it would be fine if we all got this, and it was a mild illness for the vast majority of people, is this a surprise?

lubeybooby · 18/03/2020 12:47

Very selfish. God we are so fucked. They will wish they hadn't when our ICU's have 1 bed left and 100 patients who need it

Rosehip10 · 18/03/2020 12:50

@poolpoolt Pubs were closed in Ireland due to mad drinking/partying scenes in Dublin following the government asking people to avoid social contact.

aloealoealoealoe · 18/03/2020 12:52

Where I live they ordered a curfew for yesterday so people couldn't gather. But people have t been anyway as there don't seem to be as many astounding selfish people as there are in the UK.

HonestlyItsFine · 18/03/2020 12:53

Rosehip10 which is exactly what is happening here. And why the government needs to force them to close.
the larger chains are never going to do the responsible thing.

MummyPop00 · 18/03/2020 12:53

The powers that be need to brand every one of the feckers with a big red X on their foreheads. Just so we know who to stick at the back of the ICU queue

emmathedilemma · 18/03/2020 12:55

This!! @MummyPop00

RingaRosie · 18/03/2020 12:58

Pubs, cafes, independent shops & now the big department stores are closed in Ireland.
I live in the centre of Dublin, St Patricks Day was a ghost-town. It will devastate small businesses.
But, our government has given clear guidelines, and folk are playing ball with social distancing, for now.

Flaxmeadow · 18/03/2020 13:06

It's like banging your head against a brick wall.

I've been trying to discuss the seriousness of the situation with family, friends and work colleagues since the end of January, when the first cases in the UK were confirmed.

My own adult DC, who I've always tried to encourage to take an interest in current affairs and to watch the news at least once a day but...

...one who went out last night drinking and has invited his friends round to carry on partying tonight (my poor daughter in law). Another DC who is more interested in her brand new dress and getting excited about going to a big event in a pub/restaurant on Saturday and who will complain if I say I'd rather not babysit much right now.

I'm tired of saying the same things over and over again about the seriousness and urgency of the 'crisis' but nothing seems to compute

Do young people even watch the news these days...I despair

donquixotedelamancha · 18/03/2020 13:20

Yes.

PersephoneandHades · 18/03/2020 13:21

I agree with a previous poster that until the government take this very seriously many idividuals won't. Up until three days ago I was in the 'as long as you're practising good hygeine you're being responsible' camp. I didn't know how serious this was until I learn't about about the ICU statistics, and am now pracising social distancing as best I can.

Iwantacookie · 18/03/2020 13:32

Agree with pp until the government bans it completely there are still going to be people ignoring advice.
I also think alot of confusion is coming from symptoms being similar to a cold so people are just carrying on as normal.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 18/03/2020 13:48

^agree

badcactus2020 · 18/03/2020 14:14

I don't think the government expected everyone to follow the advice tbh. They must know that it'll quieten footfall but won't stop people going our altogether.

I don't necessarily think people are selfish for going to the pub. It's not been banned just advised against and some people won't yet have grasped the severity of this.

Also I walked past a spoons yesterday and they had plenty of custom who all looked to be in the vulnerable age range. Let's be honest, there are plenty of people who simply can't stay away from alcohol because they have a problem with it.

These things are far more complex than people simply being selfish and if they want to stop people going they'll have to ban it.
