Hi all,

I’m currently on maternity leave and I’m only receiving statutory maternity pay. Monthly this is a quarter of the amount I was earning before.
My daughter is only three months old and we are practically solely dependent on my partners wage.
He’s had a meeting today to decide if his company is going to have a lay off period. If he does he won’t get paid and will only receive £29 a day. I have spoken to our mortgage company this morning who have said we can have a mortgage holiday if it happens. The problem is even if you take to mortgage off our monthly outgoings we still wouldn’t have enough money to cover bills. That’s even before we have brought food shopping, baby milk and toiletries!!!
I don’t know what to do ! We only have very little savings, not even enough to cover one months worth of bills.
Any advice?
I can’t be the only one in this situation?
Thanks x

Can you end your maternity leave early and go back to work now?

Bluebells45 · 18/03/2020 12:29

I thought this already but we have not got any nursery placement set up yet. Even if my partner was off for a month so he could have her then, were screwed when he gets called back into work. We couldn’t have they money to pay the nursery fees up front. And then if I went back and my partner went back after a month I’ve lost 5 months maternity leave with my baby.
😢I could cry right now x

You absolutely won't be the only one. I'm really hoping that the government's updates today address some of the gaps.

I don't have any good advice, but moneysavingexpert has produced a page about Coronavirus and money that might be useful?

www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2020/03/uk-coronavirus-help-and-your-rights/

It's being updated regularly.

Whilst you're thinking about it I'd be tempted to do a very in depth check of all your incomings and outgoings. I'd be looking at 'essential costs' and 'luxury costs'. I'd then be splitting luxury costs into 'feels essential', 'nice to have'. That way you know exactly what you can get rid of (if you need to) and in what order.

I'm In the same boat except my DH will get £0 due to being self employed. I don't have the answer but might look at going back to work early!

How long has dh been with his company? If more than 2 year he should get some redundancy.

What are the bills you have to pay after mortgage? Can any of them be stopped?

@Curiosity101
We have cancelled or payed off anything unnecessary while I was pregnant as me being off didn’t leave much disposable income x
