Haircuts - what to do?

All concerns aside about the actual coronavirus for the moment - it's very serious etc etc and we need to reduce social contact etc etc.

I do have a serious question about haircuts. I have very thick, fast growing hair and I wasn't able to get my hair cut last week as I cancelled following starting to WFH (hairdresser was near office). I usually have a good cut done every 6-7 weeks so was overdue past last cut just after the new year.

Any suggestions around how to deal with an unwieldy barnet in these trying times? I'm currently looking at 12 weeks in isolation with my diabetic husband, so any DIY options would be appreciated!

Seriously this is your concern right now?! 🙄

I think it’s perfectly reasonable for someone to ask for suggestions on DIY haircuts in these times.

I’ve cancelled my home hairdresser and am going to let my short style grow. I can trim the fringe myself and my husband will trim the length if need be. The layers will have to take care of themselves.

I read somewhere that In France they have considered hair salons to be a vital industry and allowed them to stay open

Ambresolaire · 18/03/2020 11:49

Sorry I just wish a haircut was in the top 100 things that I'm worried about right now

Thoughts and prayers

@emmathedilemma

That made me snort 😆😂

I'm actually self isolating, I needed the laugh. Thank you

Thanks for that youtube/thread link - that's a pretty nifty trick.

My teenage son has threatened to call the police if I come at him with a pair of scissors Grin

I have been bugging him to get his hair cut since feb. His loss now. He’ll have to embrace the grunge look.

My hair is of no concern, can only afford a haircut ever 18 months anyway. But regardless, it’s way down the list of priorities right now.

purpleboy · 18/03/2020 12:00

I agree @daisypond at least op is actually being sensible!
Sorry op I have no advice apart from thank you for doing your bit in order to protect the old and venerable. Plenty aren't.

lilibet · 18/03/2020 12:08

A related thought, my mum is in her ninties and her hairdresser visits once a week to wash and 'set' her hair, she can't wash it herself.

I can't see a way round this other than a ton of dry shampoo, any one else?

DontCallMeShitley · 18/03/2020 12:24

Depends on your hair. I use Crea Clips or tiny rubber bands for mine although do have a background of working with hair. There are plenty of videos on YouTube to show you how to cut your own hair if you are unsure.

I tried the MN haircut once and looked as if I had been attacked by a plague of giant moths.

TonOfLead · 18/03/2020 12:31

I sympathize OP. I don't care about my own hair, but DS gets grumpy if his gets too long (sensory issues). I'm eyeing up hair trimmers on Amazon but I am incompetent when it comes to hair stuff. It is unlikely to go well.

Yes I remember a few years back when there was a thread dedicated to people doing it and then posting pics. It was very very funny.

Deelish75 · 18/03/2020 12:39

For DP and DS it's going to have to be clippers.

For me DP is going to have to do my roots. My hair is shoulder length and very thick. I normally grow it in the spring/summer so I can tie it up, so I'm quite happy to go for a few months without cutting it.

I'm just going to leave DD's hair.

Maybe see if your hairdresser can book you an appointment for 13/14 weeks time - if isolation is extended you can always push your appointment back.

madcatladyforever · 18/03/2020 12:40

Just let it grow. Nobody will die because of long hair.
Have you got any pudding basins?

Frenchfemme · 18/03/2020 13:10

@Blobby10 Sadly not true. My lovely “coiffeuse” is closed, and as I had to miss my last appointment (4 weekly, very short hair) I will soon be looking distinctly shaggy. Not as bad as my 2 Spanish Water Dogs who are due their annual shearing and will shortly resemble yetis! I hope these small independent businesses will be able to survive.
