Everyone is annoyed and thinks I’m crazy

My DH has started to work from home, I’m a stay at home mum so decided to take ds (13) and dd (10) out of school. My friends think I’m crazy and the school were not very impressed. I know people on here are doing similar but is this a cross section of people ? Feeling really worried now as I suffer from anxiety so questioning my judgment.

You're doing the right thing. Mine have been off since Monday. I don't care what people think. Our health is more important.

iloveredwine · 18/03/2020 09:08

Our school sent an email out saying if people want to take children out if there is vulnerable people in the family that was fine.

IntoTheUnkown · 18/03/2020 09:09

Loads of my very sensible friends have taken their children out of school. My view is that if you’re in a position to do it then reducing social mixing is a good step to take.

R2221 · 18/03/2020 09:11

Mine are off. I don’t care what anyone thinks.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2020 09:13

I think not closing schools is a sensible idea for a few reasons but if parents need or want to keep kids home then they shouldn't give a hoot what anybody thinks.

DismantleMe · 18/03/2020 09:26

I'm in a similar situation. I've taken my children out of school but we have been well supported and had home learning resources provided. Everyone is reacting differently to this, you just have to do what you feel is right for your family.

missperegrinespeculiar · 18/03/2020 09:39

I am giving it another couple of weeks, then they are out! just waiting for school to organise their online teaching and still not many cases locally, so I think we can wait that long, we have homeschooled in the past while travelling, so it does not worry us

Talia99 · 18/03/2020 09:39

Many of the private schools are closing so I guess the question is whether rich kids (yes, I know some private school parents make massive sacrifices) and their teachers have worse immune systems than everyone else. If not, why aren’t all schools closing?

HairyFloppins · 18/03/2020 09:40

A couple of the schools around here are already closed due to staffing levels.

I hope they all close soon.

middleager · 18/03/2020 09:42

Weeks? No chance.

Teachers and students are exhausted, falling ill and being forced to close due to staff shortages or illness.

SnoozyLou · 18/03/2020 09:42

You do what you think is right. In 2 weeks time we'll be in a different place and I think you'll be glad you didn't listen to them.

catspyjamas123 · 18/03/2020 09:44

The divide is between people who need the childcare and those who don’t. It’s not a doing national service to send a child to a mass gathering where the virus can spread! Hopefully once the aid for businesses, the self-employer and their workers kicks in most people can stay home and something be set up for essential workers. At present the fewer kids go to school the less it’s likely to spread. You are doing the right thing!

day1intheisolationhouse · 18/03/2020 09:45

We took them out on Monday and last night my DS developed symptoms so we definitely did the right thing.

We lied to the school that I had symptoms on the first day though and were all self isolation as a result so we wouldn't get an unauthorised absence.

Ignore your friends, you're doing the right thing.

LuxLFC · 18/03/2020 09:47

I think it's only a matter of time before the schools shut anyway. When people question actions you take to protect your family tell them to STFU! You do what you need to do to feel comfortable in the situation.

Hoggleludo · 18/03/2020 09:48

Mine have been off for over 10 days. Last week they were actually unwell. Then this all hit. I rang the school up. I have something called Addison's disease. I don't make cortisol. So we a normal person gets unwell. With a flu. You make extra cortisol. To help your body recover. Well I don't even make enough to survive. Without a flu! So we replace it. We have to give extra in times of illness. So I rang the schools up. Explained about it. They knew about my illness anyway. They told me the government are telling them to use the Y code. So we wouldn't be fined etc.

cantdothisnow1 · 18/03/2020 09:58

I already home ed and have socially isolated since Monday because it is the right thing to do and because my kids have additional needs and if I end up in hospital (unlikely but possible) they will struggle to cope.

A family member who works for the NHS is rather annoyed that I haven't wanted to see her and my niece who is in pre-school.

I'm not sure If I'm being way over the top here !

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 18/03/2020 10:01

Mine are off. We are self isolating because my youngest had a fever over the weekend. It feels weird because we are all fine and healthy now (fever has gone), kind of like we are skiving especially as I work, but rules are rules.

Thewheelsarefallingoff · 18/03/2020 10:18

Mine are off from today. While most children are likely to have mild symptoms, some will have severe symptoms and may need to be ventilated. I am not going to knowingly risk that. I don't think we can be at all confident that only people in at risk groups will have severe illness. We don't know enough yet.

AgnesNaismith · 18/03/2020 11:25

Mine are out too...have been since Monday and there are now children with very high temps self isolating in each of their classes. I have no idea if we’ve managed to swerve the virus here but full faith that we’re doing the right thing Flowers

Iwalkinmyclothing · 18/03/2020 11:27

My younger children's school have sent us all a daily message, today they fully understood said any parent who felt the need to take their child out of school. They have a wonderful attitude and I have emailed them so say so!

If your friends think you're crazy so what? Do what works for you and yours.

Ozziewozzie · 18/03/2020 11:30

Don’t worry. A lot of teachers would thank you. We are starting to see schools really close to us close from tomorrow. Emails have just come through. It’s due to staff shortages due to isolation rules. The poor teachers have tried to keep going along with nhs staff but the outcome is inevitable.

YgritteSnow · 18/03/2020 11:38

I took dd out from today. She came home yesterday and told me there were only 16 in a class of 30 in yesterday and a special assembly to talk to everyone about it. Im sure there would be even less today. I've no intention of leaving her to be the last one in. A teacher friend of mine said that in many schools there will be so much pressure on each teacher to provide cover that there is unlikely to be much effective teaching anyway.
