Would you change jobs at this time

I work in a school kitchen and have for some years. Now my dc are older I don't really need to work school hours and have been thinking of something with more hours for ages, however nothing has been available nearby that would suit me. With the recent Coronavirus news I was convinced school would close for weeks and I wasn't sure if I would be paid, meanwhile a job did advertise in a local nursing home, which I have got an interview for.

Now schools are staying open so far, and I have been told I will be paid if the school should close. It's still less hours than the nursing home though. I feel a bit guilty to leave colleagues at school when they may be short staffed at a difficult time, however there is still a good chance the school could close and I feel working in the nursing home would be a good thing to do. I don't like the idea of being stuck at home for weeks if school closes and would rather be working.

Another worry is job security if I did get sick or we have to self isolate, as I am a new starter and they might just get rid of me. My dh has a condition on the list of vulnerable people although he means to keep working if he can (he can't WFH). I don't want to increase risk to him so this is another consideration.

I'd stay put. Is the nursing home private? You're better off in a school because it's council run....

Thanks the nursing home is private. School kitchen is also run through a private company, of course I have more rights there as I have been working for them for over 5 years.

No way. Everything is so uncertain at the moment.

Hold tight where you’ll definitely get paid and see.

Thanks I must admit I am still a bit torn as the nursing home job does look interesting if I were to get it. Dh is not taking things as seriously as I would like and is pretty much carrying on as usual. He likes the idea of me getting a job with more hours so he is encouraging me to continue with the interview. On the other hand I do see the sense of continuing where I am where the job is secure.

No. Far too easy to be gotten rid of when you're new. I work in HR and see this all the time even before Corona. If you're an unknown quantity, they are not likely to do you any favours.

That in itself is not the worst thing, you can always look for another job. Only there won't be any. And there'll be thousands of newly displaced people also looking, desperately.

So you may get stuck with no job and no money. Not worth the risk

YangShanPo · 18/03/2020 09:12

Thanks @CloudsCanLookLikeSheep nice to hear from someone in HR. It does seem like I would be better off staying put for now and start my job search up again when things are more normal.

I'm in the same boat! I was looking for a new role but have decided to shelve it for now. I have memories of being out of work the 2009 recession and they aren't pleasant. Taking a job I knew I couldn't do and was going to get fired from, just because I was on four weeks notice from day one and it was the only way I could pay my rent.
