Is anything being done about how this all first started?

I read it was traced to a market in China from a bat. Is there going to be any laws introduced to prevent anything else like this happening again? I haven't read anything about this in the news

Also, and this is just me wondering- how did they find out it's a news virus- as the symptoms sound like something similar to flu so did people start dying before they started testing for other viruses?

Sorry animals to humans,,

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 18/03/2020 08:41

There are a number of infectious diseases that have originated from bats, usually when they come into contact with domesticated animals. Effectively we've been encroaching on their environment and the outcome is fairly serious outbreaks including things like Nipar etc. I think we need to consider how we live alongside the environment especially as this isn't the first outbreak potentially caused by a bat.

I'm going through various stages of emotion and right now I feel bloody pissed off that the whole world has been affected by this one thing. It's totally unbelievable.

Did you find SARS unbelievable? Or MERS? Or EBOLA? Or ZIKA? SWINE FLU?

Methinks not

It's only unbelievable not because the whole word is affected but because YOU personaly are are being affected by it.

#snowfakementality

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 18/03/2020 09:09

@adiposegirl2 I don't think it's a snowflake mentality when people are loosing their jobs and worried about their health and the health of their loved ones, particularly as the NHS was already on it's knees. The recommendations that have been released by the government are unprecedented in peace time. Call me a snowflake but it seems pretty serious to me.

Bluntness100 · 18/03/2020 09:14

I also don’t think it’s snow flake mentality. The world has not seen anything on this scale for decades. Yes other diseases have occured, but nothing on this scale for a very very long time.

adiposegirl2 · 18/03/2020 10:28

Im sure the government recommendations of the countries that got through SARS, EBOLA, MERS, MARSBURG, SWINE FLU AND ZIKA where unprecedented in peace time too?

But these things didnt affect us so no one actually gives it much thought. Did you ever ask yourself 'what would you do if it happened to me?' Why would you? It seems not even our Cobra had planned for a viral outbreak.

I really did expect more people to be taking precautions- when going food shopping for example.

I really hope after this all the people of the world take more of an proactive interest in what goes on in the world. We are one big ecosystem after all.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 18/03/2020 11:08

Those outbreaks didn't advise that people at risk should minimise social contact for 12 weeks. I don't know anyone who lost their job as a result of those outbreaks whereas I do know people including myself who are directly affected by this one.

I was concerned and aware of the other outbreaks, particularly Ebola because the death rate is particularly high. I haven't been abroad in a number of years so it didn't curtail any plans.

I don't know what point you are trying to make but this is unprecedented, most of Europe is in lockdown.

It's a different discussion about public health not being prepared but honestly the NHS is in a mess so it wasn't news to me that it would struggle with anything other than a normal season. I've worked in the NHS btw.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 18/03/2020 11:11

BTW I am taking lots of precautions if I leave the house. I actually put my coat in the wash yesterday after an old lady touched my arm to say thank you for letting her in front of me in the queue. If you ask me it's people over 70 who are not taking this seriously with plenty blithely carrying on their daily lives, whereas I'm desperately trying not to leave my small flat because I'm in an at risk group.

HappyHammy · 18/03/2020 11:19

Anyone here seen the film Contagion. A bat in China eats a banana and drops a bit. Pig eats the dropped banana and is sold live in the market. Live pig slaughtered in a restaurant and chef never washes his hands. He shakes hands with customer and so it spreads. Grim.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 11:25

Yep Happy it’s really good and there’s lots of similarities

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 11:25

Albeit Hollywood style

TheLadyAnneNeville · 18/03/2020 11:34

The Chinese Govt need to sort this out. If these markets are illegal and have caused a worldwide pandemic and thousands of deaths, never mind the economic catastrophe now and for years to come, then China, one of the richest nations on the planet should be sorting their shit out,

For so many years, I’ve signed petitions asking for live dog markets to cease. Well, here we are. Thanks China. Very civilised.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 18/03/2020 11:53

It's not just bats in markets we put livestock near forests and encroach on the bats territory. We are also to blame and nature is fighting back.

Contagion was based on a real life disease named Napier with a 75% death rate so I don't think it was sensationalised that much.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 18/03/2020 11:54

*Nipah not Napier

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 11:55

Oh really? Incredible. The science parts were good and interesting. And how much we touch our faces.

AnneJeanne · 18/03/2020 12:03

There’s also a very large biomedical research laboratory in Wuhan, where these viruses are kept and studied. It could have walked out on someone’s shoe. The wet market narrative is from a film, but I suppose it could be true.

Bluntness100 · 18/03/2020 12:26

But these things didnt affect us so no one actually gives it much thought

I think you’re missing the point. No one is saying a virus is unprecedentedly in peace time. What people are saying is the sheer global scale of this and the devastation, chaos, death, illness, financial and social consequences is unprecedented.

Bluntness100 · 18/03/2020 12:29

It could have walked out on someone’s shoe. The wet market narrative is from a film, but I suppose it could be true

Some folks do love a good conspiracy theory. Why accept the simple and reasonable answer when you can search for a good old conspiracy theory instead.

I’m fairly sure the Chinese government would much prefer this was a failure at some lab, shut it down and bring in harsh punishments than put it down to something much much more complex like the issue of live stock, food chain and cultural/historical Chinese medicine practices which they have said is the issue. Hmm

And yes the who etc, they are all in on it and lying too.

NanSlayer · 18/03/2020 12:32

The GOV website officially says Wuhan, Hubei Province, China

China are blaming the Americans.
Trump is tweeting Calling it the ChineseFlu or WuoFlu
This could get scary real quick

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 12:41

Let’s hope he’s all bluster as usual. The first serious speech he did he said ‘we’ are beating this referring to China. Changed since then but he needs to look good as his initial hoax statements are proved to be wrong.

Not that he can’t say exactly what he wants without facts not anyone remembering or caring. He also has an election to win and will say anything to win it. Hopefully not do anything.

ImfinallyaMummy · 18/03/2020 13:39

@adiposegirl2 Errr don't correct me, you don't know me and have no idea about me. I stand by my original post. 🙄
