Testing for the wealthy

Wealthy VIPs are going private for £375 coronavirus testing kits www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8124329/Wealthy-VIPs-going-private-375-time-coronavirus-testing-kits-Harley-Street.html?ito=native_share_article-masthead

I'm not surprised. Just saddened angry and tired. My teen has a temperature of 39 and I have no way of knowing what it is.

I’m more interested to know how they got the tests.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/03/2020 03:57

I was wondering that too. How come Nadine Dorries, Idris Elba etc have all been able to have tests?

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 03:57

I mean the company. How do they source them.

isabellerossignol · 18/03/2020 03:58

I'm no fan of the Daily Mail but I don't really understand the outrage in the article. They're not flouting any rules, they're just accessing private healthcare, as people do on a daily basis when they don't want to use the NHS, and have the luxury of being in a financial position where they can choose.

I'm so sorry your teenager is ill though. I hope they feel better soon, and that the rest of your household manage to avoid it.

Lumene · 18/03/2020 03:59

Idris Elba was in contact with someone known to have the disease. Could that be why for the others too?

isabellerossignol · 18/03/2020 04:00

Unless of course the NHS aren't able to source testing kits because they're being snapped up by private companies? Which I'd see differently.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 04:03

Ali stressed that the private test, which tests for Covid-19 alongside nine other viruses including Sars, Mers and Influenza A and B, should not be considered as a replacement test for the NHS test. “It should be considered a pre-screening test which, if found to be positive for Covid-19, the client would then be integrated into the NHS clinical management process,” he said.
Samples will be taken at Ali’s clinic, and tested at a private laboratory in the UK.

From The Guardian

middleager · 18/03/2020 04:05

The MP for Derby told the HoC last week they could be made there for £5 a kit.

I guess I've bitten because I haven't slept and wish we could all access a kit.

Oh, I definitely do understand that. In an ideal world we'd all have access to the same in terms of healthcare. It was just the tone of the article that I thought was off, as it implied they were doing something wrong.

middleager · 18/03/2020 04:24

Yeh, like I said I am not surprised as private healthcare is nothing new.

Misplaced anger. Ever since I heard WHO's "test, test, test" message I had naively hoped it might be available to everyone.

More annoyed at the people asking a small fortune for paracetamol the only known treatment.

SamSeabornforPresident · 18/03/2020 08:27

I'm pretty angry. They're not testing the general public because there are inadequate lab facilities to process tests, but private labs exist, to process private tests for rich people. I'm fucking furious.
