Would you have a routine tonsillectomy right now?
Tessaraqt · 17/03/2020 19:48
Booked in for a tonsillectomy this week - hospital have confirmed it's still going ahead, as I get frequent quinsy.
But a retired dr friend said now is not a good time for it, as corona affects the throat and if I caught it, I would be more likely to be severely affected by corona. Does this sound legitimate? Should I ring the hospital and ask to postpone, claiming isolation or something?
PurpleDaisies · 17/03/2020 19:50
Yes, definitely. Get it done before all routine operations are stopped.
The team would postpone if there was a greater risk. They’re more likely to know than a retired doctor.
RagamuffinCat · 17/03/2020 19:52
I would have it done now, before routine surgeries are stopped.
ShastaBeast · 17/03/2020 19:53
Is there also a higher risk if you don’t have surgery? Tonsillitis (and therefore quinsy) is often a secondary infection. I actually worry about people having non Coronavirus emergencies not getting help on this time. Plus weigh up whether you can minimise risk through isolation. Schools are likely to shut this week but pulling kids out of school.
It’s also likely you will have a long wait to get the surgery after this point.
PerfectParrot · 17/03/2020 20:04
I'd get it done. I wouldn't want quinsy when hospitals are really full.
MitziK · 17/03/2020 20:09
Might be the last chance to get anything done about it for the foreseeable future.
And nobody's panic buying ice cream yet.
PicsInRed · 17/03/2020 20:31
I'd get it whilst routine post op antibiotics are freely available.
GPwife2411 · 17/03/2020 20:33
I'd get it done and then self-isolate / severely social distance until completely healed up.
CornflakeBreath · 17/03/2020 20:33
I wouldn’t. I’d be too afraid of the potential bleeding risk afterwards and not being able to get the help necessary if a and e is busy.
DreamingofSunshine · 17/03/2020 21:59
My DS had his done last week. If we didn't I'm not sure he'd be getting them done this year, and he's suffered with numerous bouts of tonsillitis for far too long.
