Covid
Are you planting for food shortages?

I can’t decide if this is a good idea or bloody ridiculous? I grow loads of fruit anyway. But not veg, as I’m not a great gardener and don’t have time
But could turn small lawn into a veg patch. It’s no good getting to the summer and realising we have a food shortage, is it?

We're simply growing sprouts and mung beans in the kitchen at the moment. So yummy, so versatile, so easy.

I was planning on doing this anyway (Covid or no Covid) but didn't get anything in preparation. Now I don't really want to go to any shop without it being 100% necessary so won't be able to do it and I am very frustrated with myself.

What do you need? Besides seeds/plants? I wasn’t planning any fancy planters. Hmm... probably need some compost actually?
Ted27 · 17/03/2020 20:03
you can many veg in pots or containers. I've grown spuds in bin bags.
Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, peas and beans can be grown very easily in pots, as can onions and some types of carrots and parsnips. Pea shoots, beansprouts can be grown in jam jars.
I have an allotment but still grow a lot of my stuff in containers of various descriptions. You just need a bit of imagination - I've grown things using supermarket large bags for life as the container.
You can order seeds on line.

compost and seeds. A planter probably or if not something to dig the ground with as our garden is mostly grass.
TwelveIslands · 17/03/2020 20:09
A bit, yes. I was going to sort my garden out this year anyway, and now I've got nothing else to do for the foreseeable, I may as well get on with it!
SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 20:23
I need to plant things IN THE GROUND, because watering is not my strong point
RaininSummer · 17/03/2020 20:23
I love gardening but have very little luck with veg in my back yard. Tomatoes get blight most years, courgettes die of that mould on leaves after a small amount if fruiting, beans, lettuce and peas get savaged by slugs. I manage a few strawberries, physalis, herbs and blueberries but rarely is anything else worth the effort.
