Me and my just turned 2 year old child have been staying with my family. Across the space of 7 days everyone except me has come down with a cough and fever. DS has become steadily worse over the last 48 hours and last night barely slept. Shaking with a fever of 40.

He’s managed 1 wheetabix this morning and some weak squash throughout the day. I’ve called 111 and all I have been advised to do is so to stop administrating nurofen and only give calpol. Calpol alone has not been bringing the temp down through the night. So I am highly worried.

We are currently on the third dose of calpol for today. he’s allowed one more tonight. My worry is what If the fever becomes worse again and I can’t give anymore calpol. Absolutely no support from GP or 111. I was told to “see how it goes”! He’s currently sleeping and will probably be up all night. This is such a stressful situation.

My eldest used to get temperatures of 40 degrees at the drop of a hat at that age. We were never out of out of hours with her.

I always worried about the maximum four doses per day but an out of hours doctor told me not to worry about that and if it was needed, it was needed (on the basis that we weren’t giving her calpol every single day, only on days she had a temperature

We've just come out the other side of this exact situation. 3 days of temps. Highest 40.4.
No way we'll ever no if it was covid or not but isolating just in case

I remember the days before ibuprofen was invented. With children we just gave 4 doses of paracetamol in 24 hours and took basic measures like fan in the room, not directly on them. Cool cotton sheet covering if you have one. Ice lollies( home made if necessary) to cool down and keep up fluids. No tepid sponging because it can make them shiver which raises the temperature.

Terribly worrying for you. Hope all is well.

Go to A&E. If you can't control the fever go in.

Coulddowithanap · 17/03/2020 19:37

From what I've read, ibuprofen will make symptoms worse (same as with chicken pox) so just stick with calpol.

As a pp says go to a&e if you need to.

LRCG · 17/03/2020 19:52

With a fever that won't go down and such a young child I'd be inclined to go to a&e as pp have suggested. My little one was in and out of hospital with chest infections, fevers etc and it is so worrying

Thank you all for your replies and advice. Im currently using some cold compress and if things do get worse through the night then I’ll defo will take him to A&E as suggested.
