I have type 2 diabetes and work in a school I'm not sure if I'm meant to self isolate and if so how long for, can anyone help?

You should be social distancing for 12 weeks.

Northernwarrior · 17/03/2020 18:27

In your circumstances I would self isolate. Does your school have a policy on this.

TabbyMumz · 17/03/2020 18:33

You need to follow Government guidance. Diabetes is on the list of conditions whereby you social distance for 12 weeks. If you tell your employer, they should tell you the same.

SabineSchmetterling · 17/03/2020 18:35

You should be socially distancing for the next 12 weeks according to government advice.

I spoke to my head teacher and she said it's up to me!

I dont want to drip feed but my oh has MS he works for the dwp and they have sent him home today for 12 weeks. So I dont know if me and the children have to stay home too, oh is going to sleep in the spare room and we're all keeping 2m away

A colleague of mine has diabetes and he is self-isolating.

TabbyMumz · 17/03/2020 18:58

Has your oh got covid 19 or any cold symptoms? If nit, he doesnt need to sleep in the spare room? Currently government advice is that people with certain conditions should social distance, that's not the same as self isolate.

OscarWildesCat · 17/03/2020 19:09

Social distancing and self isolation are different things, if you read the guidance this should be clear, your oh has no symptoms so doesnt need to isolate.

bubba22 · 17/03/2020 19:10

U need 2 self isolate

WaterOffADucksCrack · 17/03/2020 19:12

They're saying to distance. Realistically though many people fall into that category and the country would come to a standstill. Plus most people can't afford to be off work for 12 weeks.

Goatymcgoaty · 17/03/2020 19:13

I’m confused too! I’ve advised my 80yo father not to go out. Sounds like this is wrong and he can go out but stay 2m clear of people?

DrManhattan · 17/03/2020 20:13

Is it type 1 or type 2 that need to isolate?

TabbyMumz · 17/03/2020 20:17

Diabetes is on the list, it doesnt stipulate which type. It also says anyone who needs a flu jab normally, and this covers type 2 aswell as 1. The advice is out there on the Government website.

Ponoka7 · 17/03/2020 20:20

@Goatymcgoaty, no he needs to fully self isolate.

DrManhattan, both.

It's either self isolate or accept that you won't be far up the list for a IC bed and ventilator. You are more likely to die, if you are happy for that, then crack on. They've made that clear. So people's family aren't shouting at health care staff to do something when their relative has put themselves at risk.

Darbs76 · 17/03/2020 20:21

You should socially isolate for 12wks. That’s the rules which are clear.

People can go for a walk as long as stay well away from anyone else. So my elderly neighbour have been for a walk up on the air field so fresh air and won’t be stopping to chat to anyone.

Ponoka7 · 17/03/2020 20:24

OscarWildesCat, yes he does, he's got a serious health condition.

If a person lives with someone who has to leave the house, then they distance themselves from thoat person and sleeps in the spare room, because the OP could wake up in the night with a cough and it's too late.

HesMyLobster · 17/03/2020 20:56

At my school 4 members of staff have been sent home today and told to stay at home for the foreseeable future.
One has a history of heart problems, one kidney problems, one pregnant and one with diabetes.
They have all been recorded officially as "working from home" because the Head was unsure of the current situation in sick pay and didn't want them to have any risk of not being paid.

So yes, you should be at home - speak to your head ASAP

jmh740 · 17/03/2020 21:00

Thanks, so oh is going to sleep in the spare room for now
