Non essential travel - will you cancel?

housepurchaseanger · 17/03/2020 17:14

Will you cancel your holidays even if the flight is still departing and there's no specific restriction on the country?

Surely insurance won't cover it?

Amazed at people who think it’s ok to travel within the UK. Selfish. This is precisely what happened in Italy and Spain - people travelled south in Italy and spread the virus. Read the news....

VanGoghsDog · 17/03/2020 23:06

My walking club has a weekend away booked early April, about sixty of us, all traveling to and staying in one town, two nights, big communal meal on the second night, two days of walking......they've just announced they're not cancelling it.

I won't be going!

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 17/03/2020 23:07

@Usernamealreadyexists the thing that will get us through other side of Coronavirus is common decency & emotional intelligence.

Sadly our country is lacking in both at the moment.

BretonKitten · 17/03/2020 23:09

FFS. It’s not difficult. Don’t fucking travel.

ElsasSalamander · 17/03/2020 23:33

We’re meant to be going to London for a few days at Easter. Stupidly booked a non refundable room (won’t do that again Blush). We do have travel insurance but not sure the governments advisory ‘avoid non essential travel’ is enough to be able to claim. Is anyone else in the same boat? Not sure whether to just cancel now & lose the money or hold out incase the advice changes.

BackforGood · 17/03/2020 23:35

Does the new advice mean our insurers will now pay out? My airlines still messaging me saying they're flying us...??

Ryan Air per chance ?
They were still messaging my (adult) ds this afternoon reminding him to check in for his flight to Spain tomorrow Hmm

SubordinateThatClause · 17/03/2020 23:38

A friend is declaring her intention to fly to Bangkok this week. She's not bothered and "deserves her holiday"! I just don't get it 🤷🏻‍♀️🤬. It's not hard.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/03/2020 23:46

@Bretonkitten there is no need to be rude. I had also assumed the "Don't travel" advice applied to travel outside the UK. I am also aware that we have been advised not to use public transport within th UK unless essential. i was planning to visit my 78 year old mum.at the weekend who lives 60 miles away. I would drive so no public transport. It hadn't occurred to me that this sort of journey is advised against.

BretonKitten · 18/03/2020 00:09

@EmmaGrundyForPM. There is every need to be direct when people are endangering others’ live. I’d take “rude” over reckless any day of the week. HTH.

crustycrab · 18/03/2020 00:20

i was planning to visit my 78 year old mum.at the weekend who lives 60 miles away. I would drive so no public transport. It hadn't occurred to me that this sort of journey is advised against. Confused

FaceTime her. Obviously

Lynda07 · 18/03/2020 02:02

I don't have anything booked but if I did, I would cancel.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 18/03/2020 02:10

It’s really sad but I had to explain to my dad today why it was best I didn’t visit him, he’s mid seventies with immune compromised health issues. My sister lives with him and is working from home. But he didn’t understand, he said if we weren’t showing symptoms it’d be ok. I explained over the not showing symptoms initially. It’s so sad as I’d love to see him right now, but I know it’s best I don’t. But we’re in a world that at least has FaceTime and Skype so we can be glad of that!

HeIenaDove · 18/03/2020 02:20

Our HA wants to do a roof renewal in two to three weeks time Their workmen are suppossed to be coming from a different part of the country

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 02:34

FCO no non essential international travel
U.K. govt no U.K. non essential travel

Both are now over til they lift it.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 02:36

Subordinate she may well take CV with her and / or end up stranded there. That’ll be fun.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 02:38

PinkSparkly the situation now is you don’t travel. Even in the U.K.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/03/2020 03:18

FaceTime her. Obviously
Not everyone has an iPad.

Jonb6 · 18/03/2020 03:22

I'm due to return from the Caribbean in a couple of weeks but we might just stay here as at the moment it's a lot safer.

Sirzy · 18/03/2020 03:27

Those people who have booked non refundable rooms it is worth contacting the booking agent/hotel a lot of places are rebooking things anyway.

I had rooms booked through booking.com which because where so close to going has fallen out of the free cancellation period but both places waived that. We will now rebook both places for later in the year

soundsystem · 18/03/2020 03:38

We've cancelled. Our travel and accommodation can both be rebooked for later in the year so hopefully we'll get to go at a future date. I found the campsite we're staying it really helpful with this and we didn't have to use our travel insurance.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/03/2020 03:39

If you are driving from A to B does it matter how big the distance is?

My nearest Tesco is 7 miles away. Presumably it's ok to drive there. So why is it not ok to drive to my mum's 60 Mike's away? If I went to Tesco I'd be interacting with several people. If I drive straight to my mum then it"s just her I interact with. I really don't understand why one is ok and the other isn't.

LittleCabbage · 18/03/2020 07:25

EmmaGrundy Your Mum is in a high risk group which has been advised to self isolate. If you visit her, you may unknowingly pass on the virus. Also, if you have to get fuel, you risk passing on or acquiring the virus.

These risks also apply to going to Tesco, but buying food is not "non-essential" and therefore justified. Also, theoretically, high risk people should not be at Tesco (if they are following the advice).

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/03/2020 07:51

@LittleCabbage I recognise I might unwittingly pass the virus on to her. But she is happy to take that risk.

She was away visiting friends over the weekend, coming back on Monday morning. The journey involved 2 hour train to London, tube across London, then another train home. I spoke to her on Sunday night to suggest she got a taxi from Paddington to Liverpool Street and she told me I was being ridiculous.

ElsasSalamander · 18/03/2020 07:54

Thanks Sirzy I’ve had a look at hotel website this morning & should hopefully be able to rebook. Train I am able to rearrange or cancel & get a refund so all is not lost!

Poppydaisies · 18/03/2020 08:18

Yes. Otherwise we'll soon be banned from leaving our house without permission like in France now!
