Should children still play out?

My twelve year old is just back from school and wanted to go to a friends house. I told him no visiting friends houses or having friends here. He doesn’t understand why he can’t do that when he’s been with them at school all day. He asked whether he could play outside with them. Would you allow this? Seems less bad than indoors.

He’s also told me the girl he sat next to today was coughing and had a fever, so was sent home. But I’m still supposed to send him to school unless he has symptoms. No idea what I’m supposed to do and he expects me to have all the answers.

Until they are stuck in, they might as well play ‘out’, I wouldn’t be keen on playing out at someone else’s house though

I totally see where he's coming from, it doesn't seem to make much sense really but I suppose it just comes down to school being essential (just now anyway) and playing out not being essential, and cutting down opportunities to spread. If he's been sitting beside someone who's probably got Covid though I'd advise you to really be strict because he could well have it and pass it on.
