even though I'm not using them, just so I can support them and help keep them afloat during these difficult times?

We were meant to be going out for a meal on Sunday to a local pub. They’re hoping to be offering a takeaway service but if not I’m going to buy a gift voucher to use when all this has blown over.

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/03/2020 17:36

If you've got money to burn how about donating to the local food bank or charities to help the homeless, the starving single mums etc instead of corporations who pay their staff minimum wage and will make them redundant at the drop of a hat?

Don’t you just love it when people think they have the right to tell you how to spend your own hard-earned money? Hmm

Likethebattle · 17/03/2020 17:49

Out local places have suggested buying vouchers to use after the lockdown.

iklboo · 17/03/2020 17:55

A lot of our local restaurants & cafes are offering delivery / take out for the next few weeks.

Butterymuffin · 17/03/2020 18:40

@WhatTiggersDoBest people here are talking about small businesses and the self employed, not large corporations. Were you so keen to tell people off you forgot to actually read the posts? Hmm

YeahWhatevver · 17/03/2020 19:03

In the event of school and after school care closing we've decided that we're going to keep paying for it.

The ladies who run it are awesome, all the kids love it and they need our support.

SleepyNightOwl · 17/03/2020 19:41

If you can afford it I don’t see why not, are they allowed to just accept money? Is there a way to do that?

Livelovebehappy · 17/03/2020 19:56

Not sure there will be enough of us to make a difference to be honest. I would say most of us are going to struggle financially and much as it would be nice to support businesses who will suffer as a result of the virus, a lot of us are going to struggle to keep ourselves afloat and won’t have spare cash to pay for imaginary meals and services.

MrsGrindah · 17/03/2020 19:59

Erm.. is it legal for them to accept random payment without an exchange of good or services unless you signed a regular contract? I don’t know ..just speculating

Teacher12345 · 17/03/2020 20:02

I've suggested our local pub do a delivery service. Turn the waiters into delivery people. We get our drinks and food and the pub still gets money!

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 17/03/2020 20:06

The thing is though is a lot of people's income is not secure. Realistically we don't know how long this will last and most people will not be able to afford to do this, I am not sure how secure my income is and I dont have enough savings to get me through 3 months of no work. Everything is very uncertain and not a lot of people will be able to risk the spare cash

It's a nice gesture but everyone will have to do the same and I think most people will be saving their money at times like this. It's all very well to do this, but you have to be confident that it won't leave you to really struggle in a couple of months and the business go under anyway.

bemoreeverything · 17/03/2020 20:08

Honestly? There are far more needy people. By a mile.

bemoreeverything · 17/03/2020 20:10

Don’t you just love it when people think they have the right to tell you how to spend your own hard-earned money?

I'm a thread where someone is literally asking if they should spend it on X/Y/Z it is entirely reasonable for replies to involve other suggestions.

PerditaNitt · 17/03/2020 20:13

I’m thinking about keeping payments going to my cleaners, even if they can’t come to work, since I’m lucky enough to be in a job which allows me to work from home if needed and provides sick pay.

ShinyMe · 17/03/2020 20:13

I'm going to have fish and chips from my local chippy on Friday - I've been going there occasionally (maybe once every couple of months) for 20 years, including the day I moved in to my house, and they're so lovely. I would be gutted if they went bust. I'll try to make an effort to go more often.

I go to a lot of theatre things, and if my next ones get cancelled (no news yet) then I'll definitely donate the money. I've already paid, and I want my regional theatres to stay open.

Darbs76 · 17/03/2020 20:13

I’m working at home and being paid so told my dog walker I’ll be using her still and even if she’s sick and can’t walk my dog I will pay her anyway. She said no you don’t have to but I’ve insisted as her husband is on unpaid mat leave to help her keep the business going in the first year since baby came along. I really don’t want to see her in dire straights and no-one could for forseen this. I hope if local restaurants start to deliver I will use their services that way still.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 17/03/2020 20:14

I know some-one who is going to put aside everything she would have spent in her local cafe, corner shop, etc. and donate it back to them.

millymoo1202 · 17/03/2020 20:20

I’m assuming you aren’t t on a zero hours minimum wage like I am so unfortunately no I wouldn’t be as would rather feed my kids if I’m honest

Coquohvan · 17/03/2020 20:32

Our local gym is small and family run by a lovely couple. People have been messaging them that they’re keeping their subs going as long as they are getting paid. They are going to do an online workout so people isolated for whatever reason can still exercise.

staringatonewall · 17/03/2020 20:42

@millymoo1202
Well obviously.

I mean clearly we are talking about people who can afford it. And wouldn’t it be better to try and help business stay afloat? So there are some jobs for people

BoringUserName00 · 17/03/2020 21:07

I know. I will be making donations to local food banks too and to any relief funds that get set up.

I was due to be going to a London theatre next weekend. They have had to cancel and people will be refunded but they have asked people to consider getting this as a credit to their online theatre account rather than a cash refund to keep them ticking over for now.

It wasn’t just giving other suggestions. It was a snarky response suggesting that OP had ‘money to burn’.

Stinkycatbreath · 18/03/2020 01:29

Im going to donate to the food bank
