Rationing

I have experienced some very selfish behaviour among shoppers in the last few days.
Should the government bring in rationing?

Yes

RedRed9 · 17/03/2020 12:56

I’ve been to TWELVE shops and can’t get loo roll. Yes.

LittleRootie · 17/03/2020 13:00

No point waiting for the Gov to sort it out, the shops themselves should limit what people can buy. I saw a sign up in Aldi stating shoppers could only have 4 units of any one thing but I think that's too much.

stella1know · 17/03/2020 13:01

It makes you understand the point of rationing, seeing people buying crayes of stuff to resell on ebay. Would need some experienced and sensible people to come up with a system (supermarket logistics experts rather than any cabinet members) time to call in the Aldi planners perhaps?

RedRed9 · 17/03/2020 13:03

I saw exactly the same @LittleRootie and totally agree - it’s too much! Why are people being allowed to buy 2 units of a 9/12/18 pack of toilet roll? This just allows the shelves to be cleared immediately. It needs to be one unit per customer.

sunnyday1976 · 17/03/2020 13:07

I've been to Aldi today, and although it didn't affect me this time, was told anyone could only buy 4 of each item. What concerned me about that was as from next week I'm going to have to shop for 4 different households (all relatives, over 70) as well as my own. Official rationing, eg. having some modern form of ration book, maybe the way to go, so we can buy the food we need for people who genuinely need it.

LittleRootie · 17/03/2020 13:09

Yep - shops are being stripped out by selfish people filling up carloads. There's plenty of people who can't afford to bulk buy anyway and haven't got a car to fill up, they just want to do a basic shop and are being prevented.

If people can't be relied on to act sensibly and decently, which it sadly seems they can't, the shops should step in.

Knocksomesense · 17/03/2020 13:10

We're in isolation. Can't book an online delivery shop.
We have food now but when we are out of isolation in 10 days, our cupboards will be bare and will there be any food left in supermarkets? I'm concerned

HavenDilemma · 17/03/2020 13:12

Absolutely they should! They won't though..... Boris won't introduce a single damn thing that costs money. Not without ulterior motive

IStressheadI · 17/03/2020 13:12

Yes. I'm very worried about running out of food. I cannot afford to stock up.
We need more of a government response on a lot of things. They are moving too slowly, keep hearing about how things might change and they might update tomorrow or on Monday if it's a weekend. Its ridiculous.

This is an emergency and it's not being treated properly.

HavenDilemma · 17/03/2020 13:14

I hope the Tory voters are happy now!!!!!

neddle · 17/03/2020 13:20

On Sunday in Aldi I was limited to four of any product.
However, I have a family of 7 and only being able to buy 4 ready meals or 4 packets of noodles doesn’t really go far.
I appreciate there needs to be some limits, but it does make it quite difficult.

PrayingandHoping · 17/03/2020 13:26

Yes and on some items such as baby formula it needs to be less than 4! In aldi they never have many cartons out and it doesn't take may selfish people taking 4 each and they are all gone. No baby drains 4 cartons a week. Nationwide parents are struggling to get their baby milk because some people have bought so much! There have been been stories of non baby parents buying it vocalising they can use it for the tea and cereal when they can't have fresh!!!! Selfish selfish selfish!

People need to accept they have to take less and perhaps go to the shops more than once a week.

Liz79 · 17/03/2020 13:28

It's bonkers that a family of 6 is allowed to buy as much as a single person. Need some sort of allowance per head, like wartime coupons!!

LittleRootie · 17/03/2020 15:41

Fair point sunnyday1976

PrayingandHoping · 17/03/2020 16:49

@sunnyday1976 people were going out with one load of shopping, putting it in car and then coming in again

Or husband was paying for one lot and then wife taking through another lot

Hopefully they are genuine like your circumstances and not hoarding....

sunnyday1976 · 18/03/2020 13:19

@PrayingandHoping think I'll start visiting various shops, but I hate the idea of people thinking I'm panic buying!!

shirleybanister · 23/03/2020 16:14

The idea with rationing is that each family member has their own ration
