50/50 child custody - how will you cope if either household has to self isolate?

My DD (aged 8) lives with me 8 nights, ex 6 nights in a row, in rotation.
Ex and I have just had a chat regarding preparing her for the possibility that if either household needs to self isolate for 2 weeks, the impact that will have on her normal routine.

DD will be beyond upset if she can’t see me for 2 weeks. She already gets so upset on the day when she has to go back to her dad’s.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

We really need clear guidelines about this. I assume both households will have to self isolate.

AliciaWhiskers · 17/03/2020 12:40

Following.

We've been wondering the same.

Both ExH and I are front line NHS workers and don't know what to do if self isolation happens. Or more likely who responds if we get a call from school to collect a child.

We decided we are likely to go with whichever parent has the child at that time has to self isolate. And if it's collect from school then it may well be me who self isolates as ExH is a Dr and my role is less important currently.

It's shit, but these are shit times.

@AliciaWhiskers same, ex and I just agreed that we have to just deal with things on a day by day basis, and that if one household shows symptoms and DD is there at the time, that she will need to stay there for two weeks.
She comes back to me today, and I’ll just have to try to prepare her for the possibility.

I've thought about this.

I will still have my child, will isolate if necessary. If ex refuses to "share" at this time, I'm willing to have 100% care for the duration. Ex's choice. Frankly, my child's chances are much better with me anyway. Hmm

Ex is a "difficult" character so that's entirely possible - no, likely - for me.

I absolutely think that abusive men will use this crisis as an excuse/facilitator for custody threats/abduction and also domestic violence or murder (to run under the radar) and I'm far more concerned about this than the virus itself.

AliciaWhiskers · 17/03/2020 12:45

Yes I think talking about it and preparing for it is all we can do.

My DSS was here at the weekend. Coughing. Dry cough. He's now been told to self isolate.

Spoke to my work and they said as he doesn't live here full time and was only here 2 nights, I can go in 🤷🏼‍♀️

toobusytothink · 17/03/2020 12:46

Interested too. I’m thinking isolate in 2 different houses but ok to go between the 2?

tigerbear · 17/03/2020 12:47

@PicsInRed I agree. Scary

@toobusytothink yes that would work as well I think. Ideally for me and my ExH we would want to try and keep one of us in work but if that meant putting others at risk we would isolate both houses.

So, things have kind of kicked off here.
I collected DD from school last night, after she’d been at exDH house for 6 nights.
Her school has closed as of yesterday, so she’s at home with me.
Got a message from exH wife earlier, to say they’re pretty certain he had the virus (it must’ve come on quick, as he was at school pick up yesterday to collect DD stepsister), so they’re now all self isolating.

We’ve decided that DD will now stay with me for two weeks, however I’m not sure if our household also needs to self isolate?? DP currently still has to go out to work, whilst I work from home anyway.

I think its all self isolate.

Two households here - we will self isolate separately and continue the shared care. Just a short car journey between us.

tigerbear · 18/03/2020 13:33

@Maladymaker - it’s so confusing knowing what to do. But I suppose we do have to assume that he may have given it to the whole household, and in turn, us.

Yes I think both households should self isolate.

tigerbear · 18/03/2020 13:54

Oh god, nightmare.
DP is self employed and has work lined up for the next two weeks, but I guess it’s risky - he does home decoration etc, so has to go into people’s homes. Going to text him now and ask if he can come home.
