Just feel so conflicted and don’t know what to do... think the schools will be closed very soon but they should be closed now!

I'm sending my children, I agree it's only a matter of time till they close though.

Pamalarrrr · 17/03/2020 07:22

It's an awful dilemma. I think by Friday they'll be shut. But yanbu either way. Do what is right for you and your dc

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 07:23

For me, it would not be a dilemma. I would not send them in.

HugeAckmansWife · 17/03/2020 07:25

Presumablynif your kids stay home that has no impact on you? No missed work or pay? Schools closing will have the most enormous impact on the economy and the ability for keyworkers to work. Doctors, nurses, supermarket stockworkers all have kids. If they need to stay off, there are fewer people to deliver those services. If other people don't get paid, they can't pay rent, mortgage etc. I want to hear what the gov plan is for that. I'm a teacher, if I'm off, my kids are off but I might be asked to wfh via Web based resources.. Hard to do with them around. I do think it will likely happen soon but so far schools do not seem to be the point of transmission

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 07:26

Yes, we know huge, it’s not an easy decision but I do think at this stage if people CAN keep children off, they SHOULD. As such, there’s no real argument for secondary schools being open.

Bunnybigears · 17/03/2020 07:27

My children are going until they are made to stop. Very soon I probably wont be able to go to work I cant voluntarily not go to work now to look after kids who could be at school. Our government (unlike others) has put very little in place to help people who lose their job over this.

BeenHereForAges · 17/03/2020 07:27

I'm not. I've had enough. All home from today.

IceColdCat · 17/03/2020 07:28

My DC are going in.

TwilightPeace · 17/03/2020 07:29

I’m keeping mine off. The schools will be closing soon anyway.

Quartz2208 · 17/03/2020 07:30

Mine are I want them to have as many kind of normal days as they possibly can before it gets really tough

CatyaPurella · 17/03/2020 07:30

Mine are going in, we've just had the directive to all wfh so after today so whilst the kids are in school I don't need Grandparents help so hopefully doing our little bit of social distancing.
Will be surprised if they aren't closed by Friday

Sameold2020 · 17/03/2020 07:32

We're staying off today so I can think of the best course of action. My head is spinning. They have 100% attendance so I don't take this step lightly. It's shit.

HugeAckmansWife · 17/03/2020 07:32

But millions CANT keep then off and still work. We are using hand sanitizer, encouraging less crowding, getting one kid to hold open a door at lesson change so 100 sets of hands aren't all touching the handle / key pad. I just think we can't ignore the very real knock on effects of closure and if the especially vulnerable are now in lockdown, they wil be somewhat protected.. More so than if they have to provide childcare for their off school grandchildren

Grobagsforever · 17/03/2020 07:34

Mine are.

youngestisapsycho · 17/03/2020 07:35

Mine are going... and I’m going to work, after I’ve been to the cafe to meet my friend for a coffee. After work I’m going to the High Road to collect my watch from the jewellers, and I’ll be going in M&S for some shopping... Keep calm and carry on! 😁

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 07:35

I’m not huge

I’m saying, if you can keep them off, do so.

If you can’t, well, you can’t.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 17/03/2020 07:37

Mine are going. I think unless you have household members who are in the vulnerable groups then you should carry on as normal as much as possible. There's going to be a time where they can't go anywhere so, as someone else said, I want them to have as many normal days up until that point as possible

SupermarketFlowerss · 17/03/2020 07:37

I have to go to work so my dc have to go to school. If I didn't work I would keep them off

mymoonmyman2020 · 17/03/2020 07:42

Thanks all... I work from home but appreciate it’s so much harder for others.

I do take the point about having normal days though... so hard !

If you're able to, keep them off. It's not fair on the teachers.

foamrolling · 17/03/2020 07:42

Mine are going to continue until the schools are closed. We're not doing any of their after school activities though. For now school feels 'essential' as the schools are still open so they'll end up missing lessons. Once they're formally shut I believe there'll be work set via the Internet so they won't be missing anything. My eldest is gcse year so I don't want her missing any more than anyone else and being at a disadvantage.

Rocketpants50 · 17/03/2020 07:44

I am a teacher, I am going in, my children are to. My older dd cant go to sch today, they dont have enough staff, she will be back in sch tomorrow. I have lots of children whose parents are nurses etc and whose grandparents provide childcare. I would rather have them in my class, we are doing lots of hand washing, we only have 1 pencil each which we keep in their drawers (they tend to stick them in their mouths alot). We are doing what we can to keep open. I worry what will happen to our children who depend on our breakfast and school lunches.

Fatted · 17/03/2020 07:46

Mine are going as normal until the school is closed or we get ill. DH and I both have to work. We're both public sector and while our day jobs will probably grind to a halt soon, we are already being roped into help with other essential services.

MumW · 17/03/2020 07:46

You obviously have small DC. The DC in my family are beside themselves with worry about what will happen about their exams which are due to start in 8 weeks.

hannabarbera · 17/03/2020 07:48

Mine are going in. They're not ill.
