Would you still go to a regular check up appointment, or postpone?

I was due to go to the dentist for a check up tomorrow, as I don’t have any issues with my teeth I am classing that’s as nonessential so will be canceling it today

ValleyoftheHorses · 17/03/2020 05:15

There’s talk of dentists moving to emergencies only although we haven’t yet. I am scared to go to work, the aerosol created by dental drills on a symptom free carrier of the virus and I am infected along with my nurse and anyone who walks in after. Paper masks don’t work. Healthcare workers are getting it much worse because of the viral load.
As a profession we are waiting for a government directive to move to emergencies only. Pretty much every other country including Eire is on emergencies only already.
Now about that check up...!

ValleyoftheHorses · 17/03/2020 05:16

Orthodontist- if you have braces on it might be important to go, it’s worth checking. No aerosols in ortho.

CampfireZen · 17/03/2020 05:22

I decided to postpone non-essential dentist appt.

Partly as I've issues with my own immunity (though am not officially 'high risk' category), so not wanting to sit in busy waiting room.

But am equally concerned about my dentist's wellbeing, just in case I'm a non-symptomatic carrier.

LightAsTheBreeze · 17/03/2020 05:31

I wouldn't be surprised if it all went to emergencies only with dentists, as obviously toothache is very painful and some infections need quick action but no-one needs to go for routine check ups or hygienist visits. That emergency cover will very important though and will need to be used to stop people from rocking up to A&E

Jackrusselsarecute · 17/03/2020 06:01

I've decided to delay our routine dental checks but unsure what to do about DC orthodontist app next week- he doesn't yet have a brace, it's an assessment appointment

CrunchyCarrot · 17/03/2020 06:10

I cancelled my hygiene visit for later this week. I'm in a vulnerable group so not keen on being in waiting rooms, etc. The dentist actually sent out an email to explain how they are taking every precaution and not putting patients at risk, I think they don't want to lose the business! But they can't guarantee who comes in and maybe coughs and spreads it, or doesn't know they have it and passes it on.

I have an eye test and a dentist appt next week.

Presumably I need to cancel them.

madcatladyforever · 17/03/2020 06:42

I'm halfway through an implant. Have had the implant now and just need the impressions and crown in three months time. I'll keep in touch closely with my dentist and will be led by them.

HeronLanyon · 17/03/2020 06:45

I had some tooth pain last night. Experience has told me it doesn’t tend to get better by leaving it (unless just trapped food etc obvs). Was glad I had an emergency dental kit from remote travel at Christmas - May need to dig it out and have it handy !
In fact gonna rootle through travel suitcase - feel I may have toiletries and meds etc stashed there . . . No loo roll or gel though I’m sure. Angry

RasberryRoyale · 17/03/2020 06:45

I have a dentist appointment this morning. It’s a check up but I have been having some pain in my mouth. My dentist is still business as usual for now.

LightAsTheBreeze · 17/03/2020 06:51

Hopefully yours will be OK Madcatlady, I was just thinking thank goodness I wasn't going through the process of having a new denture made as I had been thinking of getting one, old one is OK for now just slightly loose but I can always use some glueGrin.

Any stuff like that is important, likewise braces, hopefully all the routine appointments will be cancelled now.

LightAsTheBreeze · 17/03/2020 06:54

Deffo get that sorted Raspberry if you have pain, best now while its still open.

I called our orthodontist yesterday as DD has an appointment on Thursday. They said that “for now” all appointments are running as normal unless the patient cancels.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that changed today/tomorrow. It should be essential only, but I’m not sure if tightening a fixed appliance is essential or not. DD only got her brace (first of three) on in January and this is the first tightening/adjusting of it. I have no idea if it’ll be classed as essential.

I have a filling needing replaced which I hadn’t done because my TMJD has flared up and I couldn’t open my mouth properly. Now I’m accepting that it won’t be done any time soon and I’m just hoping it doesn’t deteriorate to the point of needing done urgently.

We went to the dentist last Wednesday, just for a check up, the dentist works from a dr surgery which is now closed as of yesterday, ds has to get a tooth removed at the dentist as part of his orthodontist treatment, he is next at the orthodontist on 1st May, tooth due out on 14th April, hopefully things might be more under control by then as he is in the middle of some unique, perfectly timed orthodontic treatment, this may result in him losing teeth and needing implants!
