My car mot is due

My car mot is due middle of April. I can put it in from next week onwards but it seems like unnecessary travel and interaction really. And what if we're isolating our household by then. And then when we're ok again the mot will have expired.

This is making me realise there are a lot of things we haven't thought about.

I'd consider that to be essential travel - at the moment. It's relatively easy to drop the car off with little interaction and pick it up again. Pay online/contactless. Clean the car thoroughly when you get it back. But it's better to have the car in case you need it in an emergency.

To be honest I’d just get it done as soon as you can. What if you need to go to the shop if there is a full on lockdown? If you’ve got no car that means less food.tve contact will be minimal.

Potkettlexx · 16/03/2020 23:15

It’s not like you’re going to get it spray pained because you fancy a different colour

Pipandmum · 16/03/2020 23:17

Goodness. It's pretty essential to have a legal car. You don't have to touch the guy/girl doing the MOT.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 16/03/2020 23:21

I thought this earlier today. Ours is due soon, if we went into an italian style lockdown what then? Me and DP are front line NHS so our car is pretty essential.

Ours is going in for MOT and service on Thursday. DH will be driving there (2 mins away) and dropping off so minimal contact with people.

Not in the same league as a "social gathering" where people spend a considerable period of time in close proximity.

Get it done ASAP - if it has anything wrong that needs parts then the sooner the better in case of supply chain issues.

Proudpeacock · 16/03/2020 23:30

I am booked in for Friday. If I don't then the tax runs out at the end of the month and I would need to declare it as SORN. I don't have a driveway so would risk it being clamped etc. Also no car would limit my ability to support elderly family.

I am viewing it as essential travel. I will wait at the garage and try not to get too close to anyone.

NeilTheBaby · 16/03/2020 23:30

Thanks. I'll see if I can book it in for this week. Didn't mention dh also has a car so we wouldn't be completely without but it's one of those things I hadn't even considered before today.

Mine is going in tomorrow morning. I will have to get the bus to work and back again to pick up DD from school and again at some point to collect the car. I really wish I could avoid public transport given the current situation but it has to be done.
I will make sure to use the little bit of sanitiser I have left to clean my hands afterwards and was thinking of wearing a scarf so I can cover my mouth and nose if someone starts coughing and sneezing on the bus. I don’t care if it makes me look like a crazy person.

Gingerkittykat · 16/03/2020 23:38

I would get it done ASAP and buy wipes to wipe down the steering wheel and the rest of the plastics inside.

I have no idea if garages will close but I would say having a legal car is a priority.

mistermagpie · 16/03/2020 23:51

Mines going in on Wednesday, DH is dropping it off but then he's still required to go into work so he's at much greater risk there!

YerAWizardHarry · 16/03/2020 23:54

Mine went in for a new clutch today. I was only in the garage a grand total of 5 minutes between dropping it off and picking it up (including paying a hefty bill!)
