Impending sense of doom.. anyone else?
Hmmmmminteresting · 16/03/2020 21:47
I've been absolutely fine till tonight. I have a really bad feeling, like sick to my stomach that this is the end of the world as we know it. Am I being unreasonably dramatic? This is not like me
IndigoHexagon · 16/03/2020 21:49
Me too. My husband is self employed and he just lost his current six month contract with immediate effect (theatre work). I don’t know what we re going to do. X
Showmeyourhero · 16/03/2020 21:51
Me too Op.. I've been so positive these last few weeks but since the latest update I keep bursting in tears and having the most terrifying thoughts of things to come!
Fluffybutter · 16/03/2020 21:53
Not yet but it’s imminent.
Have started to really struggle to go to sleep even with tablets as my brain just refuses to shut off .
Not look good for food shopping by the end of the week which is worrying
Hmmmmminteresting · 16/03/2020 21:56
I think best case scenario is the world goes into lockdown for weeks and we have a huge economic crash. I cant see another way out! I really feel like something bad is coming. Wish I could snap out of it, I'm shaky and my hearts racing. I've never felt anxiety like this. I wish I knew why!
Biscusting · 16/03/2020 21:56
Okay it’s not great, but let’s look at some positives:
- it has a 2% mortality rate, still not brilliant, but that could be a much higher number.
*it doesn’t seem to affect children as much. That could be really frightening and also put more pressure on the NHS
- it’s not forever, it will calm down and normality will resume. May even make people more prepared for any future challenges, businesses more robust for future.
It will be fine, it’s challenging, but we’ll get through it. Protect the vulnerable, turn off the need for a bit. Protect your mental health
AnneJeanne · 16/03/2020 21:56
We will be fine! A small percentage of the population will die but the majority of us won’t. Ffs.
yatapina · 16/03/2020 21:58
YANBU.
I had a panic attack yesterday which I've never had before, nothing in particular brought it on but I struggled to shake it off.
I think it's a fear of the unknown, this is stuff we see in movies but not something I ever thought I'd encounter in the real world. I don't think it's the end of the world but I do think the way we live our lives will be changed now and in the longer term.
Just try to remind yourself that these changes will become our normal pretty quickly and life will resume, the extreme measures are temporary to allow us to get back to the status quo. More than ever, with societies seperated and people isolated - we need to pull together in whatever way we can to beat this.
Hmmmmminteresting · 16/03/2020 22:01
@AnneJeanne it's not even so much the deaths that is making me feel like this. Obviously that is concerning, I just think that life as we know it is about to change
Fluffybutter · 16/03/2020 22:02
@AnneJeanne it’s not just about our health , it’s about our jobs, livelihoods, savings ,food!
Hmmmmminteresting · 16/03/2020 22:02
it has a 2% mortality rate, still not brilliant, but that could be a much higher number
It's currently 3.5% based on figures released today, although I know there are probably many more thousands with it that we dont know about yet
malmi · 16/03/2020 22:02
An impending sense of doom can be a sign of an imminent medical crisis. Sorry that probably doesn't help your anxiety OP and now is not a good time to unnecessarily use NHS services but if the feeling doesn't subside it might be worth seeking help.
EC22 · 16/03/2020 22:02
I have a BMI over 40 and I am absolutely mortified that I may have to isolate due to this. So embarrassing. I can’t work from home and other than my weight I’m fit and healthy.
It’s 43 so of course my employer won’t get the scales out if I don’t say but also don’t want to put myself at risk.
Shockers · 16/03/2020 22:03
I’m not worried about catching it, I’m worried about not being able to eat, or pay our bills. DH is self employed in the entertainment industry- he’s had most of his work for the next two months cancelled.
I’m currently on a sick note and claiming ESA after surgery. I am supposed to start training for a new job at the end of this month. If my training is cancelled and my sick note runs out, I have no income either. My new job is in a college.
I fully understand the need to contain the virus, but so many people will struggle to live if they can’t work .
sittingonacornflake · 16/03/2020 22:04
OP I feel exactly the same.
Current plan for me is to take steps to follow the gov advice. So online shopping, working from home, reducing all non essential contact etc.
But you know what, after how I'm feeling tonight, I might have to seriously seriously seriously limit social media and forum time because I don't think it's helping me. No one hear knows more than anyone else it's all speculation and it's making me scared.
Hmmmmminteresting · 16/03/2020 22:04
@malmi what does that mean, a medical crisis? My mental health has never ever been an issue, I've felt like this today only
maudspellbody · 16/03/2020 22:04
Annejeanne please don't ffs at the OP. She never said she's worried that we're all going to die.
We know that's not the case. You only have to look around you to see how things are already changing. People are being made redundant and facing poverty. Big companies and small businesses are already folding - and this has only just begun.
Our freedom will be curtailed, our lives are going to change.
Who knows when we will recover and go back to normal.
It's totally understandable to feel destabilised. We don't need eye rolling and 'ffs'.
Samcro · 16/03/2020 22:06
I have been filled with doom all day
My adult dd is severely disabled, so worried for her. Adult son is self isolating at the moment, so been worried about him.
Bad day
PeterPanGoesWrong · 16/03/2020 22:06
It’s scary times. I’m sure everyone will be affected, but please op, remember.you are stronger than you think.
Our grandparents/great grandparents survived the blitz.
And finally, no amount of worrying will change things you have no control over.
Be sensible, stock up your cupboards, wash your hands, avoid crowds and please don’t stress too much x
PumpkinPie2016 · 16/03/2020 22:07
I understand that it can be worrying for people but I think we have to bare in mind that there are circa 1600 confirmed cases in the UK out of a population of circa 66 million. That's actually not many. Yes, there may be others who are self isolating because they have symptoms but they are people who are well enough to stay home. Some people will be erring on the side of caution and isolating even though they may just have a run of the mill cold virus. That's not to say they are wrong to do so but just that they may not need to.
As a country, we are taking measures e.g. self isolating, no mass gatherings, extra handwashing in schools, barrier nursing of those in hospital who are suspected of having the virus. I think we are generally approaching it in a sensible manner. From what I am seeing, many people are being on the over cautious side which will help.
My Nana has been in hospital for a week (not with corona!) And although there are/have been suspected cases in the hospital, they have isolated people and dealt with it well. They are asking for two visitors to a bed only to reduce footfall and asking people to wash their hands on entering/leaving. Again, people are really adhering to it. There doesn't seem to be any panic.
I think there will be more cases, but things will eventually return to normal and be fine.

A sense of doom may precede the following conditions:
heart attack
stroke
seizures
anaphylaxis
cyanide poisoning
blood transfusion reactions
Some people with certain mental health conditions may experience this feeling. These conditions include:
anxiety
panic disorder
depression
obsessive compulsive disorder
A feeling of impending doom may also be caused by:
adrenal gland tumor
cardiac tamponade, or the accumulation of fluid in the sac surrounding the heart

Thanks all. I'm glad I'm not alone in my thoughts but then also sad that they're justified
pigoons · 16/03/2020 22:08
Bizarrely I am calmer now it has got to this state. I was more anxious in late Feb /early march when people were returning from italy (non lockdown areas) and were being told to just get on with going to work etc. Could not understand this logic at all as people could be infectious and have none or mild symptoms. I expected a huge surge in cases and now it's happened all I can do is get on with looking after myself and my family the best way I can. I am practising resilience for DC.
Darbs76 · 16/03/2020 22:09
I have a pre existing health issue so I’m worried, but I’m fortunately employed by the Government so know I’ll be ok for getting paid still. Also fortunate my kids are 12 and 16 so can stay home alone if I’m not working at home (which I most likely will be), so don’t have to worry about childcare bills etc. I have already decided I’ll be paying my doggy daycare / walker even if she can’t walk him as her husband is off taking her mat leave so they have little income. So if you’re in a position try and support the self employed - and try and use local business. Many restaurants etc might start doing take outs, so again those who can afford it would be good to support. My heart goes out to anyone who is worrying about finances right now. I know health is no 1 priority but it must be such a worrying time not knowing how they will pay the mortgage etc

@EC22
A BMI over 40 would entitle you to a free NHS flu jab. From what I understand they are planning to advice anyone entitled to a flu jab should work from home where possible. If you don’t want to tell your employer exactly why you’re worried just tell them you are entitled to the flu jab and therefore in an “at risk” category
Might not work but worth a go!
