How long does virus last on clothes ie coats or shoes - anyone know?

We're washing clothes after going to hospital appointment for example. But the coat i wore can't go in the washing machine. Nor can the shoes I wore.

We have a small apartment and there's just no room to make a containment zone for these articles of clothing. Is there any info on how long the virus could stick around on them?

I heard 2 weeks but honestly I don't think anyone knows.

Think scientists say at most a few hours on fabric. Shoes could be wiped with disinfectant or soapy cloth?

AbsentmindedWoman · 16/03/2020 21:46

Ah fuck, that's a long time. Don't want to catch it off my own shoes ffs!

Current advice is not to lick them or stick them up your nose for 48hrs, after that you can crack on as normal.

A few hours would be better! Good point about disinfectant for shoes.

@TrainspottingWelsh I needed that laugh, thank you!

If you fear you can't resist shoving them in your mouth or nose as TrainspottingWelsh recommends, couldn't you give the shoes a rub of a cloth with a bit of detol on it? I'd probably use a spray of vinegar on the coat if I thought anyone had sneezed or coughed directly on me, but otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Not licking them no Hmm

I'm immunocompromised and a bit anxious. I have anxiety that is generally pretty successfully managed but this is a challenging time for me. To be fair I'm amazed I'm generally doing ok with all this.

OCD traits (no, not just 'a bit OCD', but traits clinically diagnosed as part of my anxiety - just not enough for OCD diagnosis) have me wondering if I brush against my coat walking past it, will the viral matter drift onto my tshirt and then I'll inevitably touch my face sometime.

I am hypervigilant on necessary trips out (grocery and medical) but at home am trying to relax and feel safe and comfortable.

Just leave your shoes and wash you hands after putting them on or off.

Northernsoullover · 16/03/2020 23:10

I dettol sprayed my childs school jumper. The clear one. I only have one and I'm not going out for a new one at the moment.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 16/03/2020 23:11

Sorry, OP, shouldn't have made light of it. Hope you're ok.

I've changed door mats because of this worry and all our coats are in one place or washed.

I'd suggest using a bin liner with a hole at the top for the hook so you can still hang your coat but it's mostly covered.
Yes, to some this might be ott but if it's going to make you feel a bit better- for the sake of a few seconds and a bag then do it. No one would know anyway.

Shoes the same or a box? We take off shoes at the door anyway to keep inside as clean as poss.
