We are forgetting about our children

We are forgetting about our children, in particular, the ones who are meant to be doing GCSEs and A-Levels this summer.

They don't even know if they will be sitting the exams as planned. They have to try to revise even though it feels like the whole world is collapsing around them.

They might not get the long summer they were promised. They might not get to go on all the holidays they were looking forward to.

Some can't even go to school to finish the course due to the government's self-isolation policy.

Exams are stressful enough without us forgetting about our children.

Are you on glue? Who’s ‘forgetting about their children’?

What !!!
They'll survive not going on holiday.
Exams and coursework dates will be changed.
They will be just fine.
The elderly and the health compromised might not be !

Won't somebody think of the children!

@fuzzymoon

And? Just because some are worse off doesn't mean younger people can't be worried, stress, and frankly miserable that they don't know what's going on.

People will always be worse off. Doesn't mean we can't think about the others.

I’m not forgetting about my child.

He’s still preparing for his GCSEs & we are hopeful they’ll go ahead. He’ll cope without the planned holiday.

He’s fine.

I'm sure they'll cope Hmm

Worse off = risk of dying vs risk of delayed exams???

Come on.

To be honest, if this government provided more certainty and upped the testing then we’d not have such worry.

If this government hadn’t spent the last ten years decimating the nhs, we’d not have the problem we do.

I agree. My ds was just finishing school in 2008, it was a difficult time in a different way.

No one is forgetting the children. Blimey. As a society we should be thinking about the poor and elderly. The front line medics who take care of us. Frankly, your kids GCSEs don’t matter in the overall scheme of things. You’re worse than the loo roll hoarders by far.

It is hard to describe how students are feeling. My son tried to describe it. They don't know what's going to happen with these exams. These exams open up their entire futures and they are struggling.

People's lives will always be a priority, but that doesn't mean we should ignore other problems.

I work in further education. Staff are working very hard to get ready for distance learning so that students can still get their qualifications this summer.

Oh come off it. No one is forgetting about their children. Exams and results will be postponed. Life as we know it is being paused. Contingency plans will be in place. We might go to ground now but eventually (fingers crossed) life and everything that goes with it will resume as best it can.

@AnneJeanne

My son has been working hard for the past 2 years in the hope he might get his grades and have a good time over summer. This is just doubling his stress. Yes, they understand people are dying and they should be a priority.

Boo hoo
Loads of people are missing out on holidays
People are facing job losses and financial ruin
People will die from the virus
GCSE students not getting to enjoy a "long summer is pretty low on the list

Nobody is forgetting about the children.

Everyone is stressed about this virus, education, jobs, businesses, the NHS, the economy, being able to get shopping... the list goes on and on, I can worry about more than one thing at a time Hmm

@Fluffiest

My son's teachers have been trying hard to make sure that they aren't disadvantaged if schools suddenly close, however some subjects won't finish teaching the course until May. They shouldn't have to go into exams without being taught everything.

I understand how stressful this is for all the staff in schools. You must all be working extremely hard.

They wont be disadvantaged in exams because everyone across the country is in the same situation. It's not like some kids will get months more teaching than others.

We are facing a global economic crisis and huge recession, countries are on lock down, we are all going to get hit extremely hard. I have my children stuck at home with me for at least the next three weeks so it is almost impossible to forget them.

All groups of people are facing uncertain times. Plenty of people's futures are looking shafted right now. It's not just about the children, it's about everybody. CV is messing my life up right now but we are all in the same boat. Our common goal should be prevention of deaths and preservation of lives. Exams, football, hobbies, clubs all have to go on the back burner.

As far as I can see the schools are bending over backwards to try and help and adjust.
Our school is taking it very seriously and no one is forgetting them. Those taking A levels this year should be pretty much done with the syllabus and are revising. Same with GCSEs. Our school is testing out online learning tomorrow, the kids have the option next week of going in or doing it remotely and if schools don't reopen they are getting prepared.
The issue is where and when they can take the exams. But I think as it's a low risk part of the population a solution will be found in time.
As for the whole world collapsing - it isn't.

I agree OP. Young people have their own priorities , pressures and stresses. Working hard all year / two years and now suddenly they could become seriously ill between now and the start of the exams, have seriously ill parents unable to support them or not even have their exams scheduled as planned and then not get into uni is as stressful as an adult losing their livelihood.

I can't understand the responses on here - mental ill health is also very common in adolescents

Adjustments and accommodations will be made for this when this time is right. It isn't a priority right now. A bit of perspective and resilience is needed here.
