My kids had corona symptoms early January 2020...

Before coronavirus was even being talked about on the news, just after Christmas and into early new year my two kids had a fever requiring bedrest, followed by a dry cough. This lasted about 2 weeks overall. They had to have a couple of days off school at the height of the fever.

Nobody else in the house caught it, unusual in itself as the adults here usually catch whatever bug the kids have. This time us parents didn’t, and I remember thinking at the time it was odd to have a cough after a fever. Usually kids just have a high temp and maybe sore throat, or high temp and vomiting. But I don’t recall fever with cry cough after.

It’s occurring to me now, could the kids have had corona back then?

Possibly. DH said on the radio they were saying it's been in the UK since December but kept quiet. I'm not sure which station he listened to, but it would explain maybe flu-type bugs we've had here if it was CV.

Bobbin98 · 16/03/2020 21:32

I had corona symptoms for theee weeks end of January. I never get a bad chest. It was awful, for three weeks I felt like I couldn’t breathe properly.

Catty99 · 16/03/2020 21:33

Not in the uk but my dc was exactly the same in late Jan - fever followed by dry cough, off school for 4 days, slept for most of that time.

RiverDee · 16/03/2020 21:33

I wonder if that means me and my husband are supposed to be tested then? Hmm

Neither of us have any corona symptoms at present, but if our kids had it we could be carrying it without knowing. It’s so confusing Confused

I was really ill along with my daughter at that time with those symptoms but felt it was flu

CodenameVillanelle · 16/03/2020 21:35

I wonder if that means me and my husband are supposed to be tested then? hmm

Why? You may have had it but that doesn't mean you're necessarily immune now.

CodenameVillanelle · 16/03/2020 21:36

If your kids had it in December you won't still be carrying it now!

yatapina · 16/03/2020 21:39

It ripped through my workplace before Christmas causing them to close down as there were no staff and then my kids school was rife with it too.

Everyone was talking about being short of breath, dry coughing and how it lasted much longer etc - I believe it may have been Covid19 now.

Veterinari · 16/03/2020 21:41

@RiverDee

First cases were occurring in China late Nov/early Dec. Travel restrictions weren't implemented until Jan 23rd. Based on that and the fact that about 86% of infections were unrecorded, coronavirus has likely been global since mid-Dec, so yes, entirely possible.

Kuponut · 16/03/2020 21:42

I had an almighty awful bug early December that knocked me for six and made my chest awful for weeks and weeks (still not fab now). Assumed it was just my mandatory "one really shitty cold of the winter" but now I'm not so sure. Will probably never know.

Now I just have my end of winter annual "yes my sinuses are still evil shits" face feeling like it's going to fall off festival of general crap.

HonestlyItsFine · 16/03/2020 21:42

The only question would be, why didn't we see a sharp uptick in ITU cases and deaths? Or would they have put them down to other causes?

Eckhart · 16/03/2020 21:47

Because most people only get the usual 'ugh I've got a chest infection' type symptoms.

Lottiebugz22 · 16/03/2020 21:59

I have also thought I have had it. I had tonsillitis then a dry cough for 8 weeks. I woke up choking on what seemed like air all the time and my throat was so incredibly dry. I had the back ache and I kept complaining of sore ribs. I went to the doctors and she said it was an unusual length of time for a cough but there was allot going around. I honestly think I may have had it now.

NorthDowns · 16/03/2020 22:08

Was speaking to mother of DCs friend yesterday, she’s a nurse & said the large hospital in Glasgow was heaving in December with people with CV symptoms, obviously at the time they were unaware of CV... Makes you wonder.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/03/2020 22:12

It might have been a virus but not the COVID-19

The NHS as with all healthcare providers across the world hold huge amounts of data it would have come to light and we would have had more people needing medical care

Certainly far more people have it than the confirmed numbers as the government has stated

almondlattecheesecake · 16/03/2020 22:16

Another one here. I was absolutely fine on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day morning, but by mid-morning I felt awful.

Over the next few days, I veered between feeling slightly better, then a million times worse.

The cough was so bad, my DH actually moaned that he'd never heard anything like it, and that I should see a doctor. I refused, but it did actually get to the point one evening that I couldn't breathe properly.

My daughter was the only other person in our family to get sick, and she had similar symptoms, including severe back pain.

We actually said to each other the other day that we could have had coronavirus, but how will we ever know?

Mary1935 · 16/03/2020 22:20

My son was sick in Feb. He’s 10 - he had a very high temp that lasted a week - he needed pain relief every 2 hours to get it down. It took 6 days.
Very unusual for him as he’s very resilient.
Take care everyone.

Saladd0dger · 16/03/2020 22:22

I got really poorly with every symptom in December. Lasted about 3/4 weeks. I’m asthmatic to and inhalers done nothing. My husband had it to but the children were fine. Most of my work place had it to. Took me weeks and weeks to get over it

Nikki360 · 16/03/2020 22:28

On January 8th my 24 year old daughter and 10 year old daughter both became unwell. Obviously at the time Coronavirus wasn't in the news. I remember saying to my husband that I had never ever seen her so unwell. The cough she had was constant she had aches pains and a fever but it was the cough that was horrendous. She actually was in tears at how unwell she was. She also had an upset stomach for a couple of days. My youngest was so ill as well lay on the couch and barely moved neither of them had a appetite. Usually with a temp I give her calpol and it goes down but the calpol wasn't doing anything. She was crying and complaining about the pain in her eyes. I took them both to doctor he said it was flu and it would be a while until they felt any better but after about 6 days both were totally on the mend. I really do think they may have had it.

BlindAssassin1 · 16/03/2020 22:36

Yes, I was rough as hell in January. But, like above, no one else in the house, or at work, seemed to be going down with the same thing. Lots of runny nose sniffles but I didn't even have that symptom.

If we could get on with some immunity testing we could make some headway with this.

Haworthia · 16/03/2020 22:38

There are loads of threads already saying this.

I had a similar virus. Do I think it was Coronavirus? Nope. And I’m certainly not going to behave like I’m already immune.

whatkindoffuckery · 16/03/2020 22:54

Based on how contagious and deadly coronavirus is, no I don't think any of have had it earlier this year. It's a pandemic. It's not slipped through the country without notice. I had the 8 week cough / flu in January, so did my Mum, so did a couple of friends. None of us required hospitalisation, let alone ventilation, none of us died, we didn't pass it on to partners, kids etc. Coronavirus is new to our shores and unprecedented in modern times. No you haven't had it before, any of you.

DressingGownofDoom · 16/03/2020 22:57

I had a very bad dose of bronchitis about 6 weeks ago and my chest still isn't right but I don't think it was CV. Like others have said, it's been tracked really closely. You wouldn't think twice about those bad viruses if not for this outbreak but no doubt it's been a bad winter for them all.

The thread police have arrived. Grin

Eckhart · 17/03/2020 00:00

@whatkindoffuckery Based on how contagious and deadly coronavirus is

For most who contract it, it's a mild illness, and for some there are no symptoms at all.
