My GP recorded my BMI at 40.2 (with clothes coat and shoes on after lunch). Me recording it first thing in the morning gives me 39.4. So am I high risk or not?

Crunchymum · 16/03/2020 21:31

I have an annual flu jab, plus the pneumonia jab but my (autoimmune) condition isn't listed?

Guttersnipe · 16/03/2020 21:35

@CakeOnMe

Disclaimer: Medical bods in my family though I am not medical myself.

Chronic means a condition that is with you all the time (as opposed to acute, which is a condition with a sudden onset). HTH

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 16/03/2020 21:35

@SpunBodgeSquarepants I imagine the BMI advice is based on the increased risk if someones does get ill. There's a severe shortage of specialist beds, lifting equipment etc. for bariatric patients and procedures like ventillation and anaesthesia are more difficult.

Sockwomble · 16/03/2020 21:35

My son has a learning disability so if an adult would be on that list.

CakeOnMe · 16/03/2020 21:37

@Guttersnipe Thanks! It’s congenital heart disease, so will assume I fall under ‘chronic’ for now

EggysMom · 16/03/2020 21:37

Who knew I'd be classed as high risk for being a fat fuck!!

I just calculated my BMI and found I wasn't as fat a fuck as I thought Grin But the phrasing concerns me. The link says "seriously overweight (BMI of 40 or over)" but overweight is 20-30 and obese is 30 to 40. So do they not mean "morbidly obese (BMI of 40 or over)"? Confused

Anyway, I now at least have a link which shows DH is officially vulnerable. I'd like to know if that list applies to children - theoretically they are less at risk, but DS classes under one of those categories.

Fab

My husband has cancer and is taking ace inhibitors for high blood pressure

We have gone to the pub

Justaboy · 16/03/2020 21:42

Seems that in India they have a cure for it! its taking the piss a bit....

tinybluerose · 16/03/2020 21:45

So ace inhibitors not on the list despite recent reports linked to high blood pressure and ace inhibitors

TheMamaYo · 16/03/2020 21:48

I must admit the 'BMI over 40' surprised me a bit. Many people of that build would lead full active lives without even considering themselves to be at higher risk of virus infections.

onetiredmummy13 · 16/03/2020 21:48

I'm so confused I'm a self employed hairdresser who's asthmatic and currently 22weeks pregnant have I to go to work or not ? Confused there could be 20 people in the salon at once ??

PeterPanGoesWrong · 16/03/2020 21:53

@SpunBodgeSquarepants being seriously overweight (a BMI of 40 or above) it is pretty self explanatory. You’re at risk.

MillicentMartha · 16/03/2020 21:55

Onetiredmummy Probably shouldn’t work, at least after next weekend or so when the new regime starts.

Thelnebriati · 16/03/2020 21:56

TheMamaYo People with a high BMI do not have an increased risk of catching the infection; but they do have an increased risk of severe consequences if they catch the virus.

Doubletrouble99 · 16/03/2020 21:57

onetiredmummy - you have two conditions which mean you should isolate for the 12 weeks as of next week.

Butternutbrownie · 16/03/2020 21:59

severe asthma (requiring hospital admissions or courses of steroid tablets)

Anyone know if a person who needs a rescue course of steroids a year counts for this, or whether they have to be on them all the time?

actiongirl1978 · 16/03/2020 21:59

I listened to the press conf on R4 earlier.

CW made it v clear - ADULTS with underlying health conditions. Children NOT included.

I am asthmatic - have been since a child and 42 now. 3 inhalers a day.

I WILL be staying at home for the next 12 weeks.

GabsAlot · 16/03/2020 22:00

still confusing sayng 7 days if u get symptms still when it was changed today to 14

Fluffyblanket287 · 16/03/2020 22:01

I have a chronic neurological condition and the children are still in school. It feels counter productive?

actiongirl1978 · 16/03/2020 22:05

@Fluffyblanket287 I think that I will just be really stringent about the kids washing their hands when they get home from school.

Merename · 16/03/2020 22:06

It is, @Fluffyblanket287. You should take your kids out of school. This advice today is too little too late.

GabsAlot · 16/03/2020 22:08

oh good im high risk apparently-well i'll so the shopping tomorrow then stay in guess

yatapina · 16/03/2020 22:08

Nicola Sturgeons announcement earlier included children as vulnerable individuals if they have any underlying condition.

cheesycrisps · 16/03/2020 22:17

I’m confused by that as well @tinybluerose. 6% chance of dying if we catch it but not on the list. I wonder if it’s because there is so many of us they’re trying not to overload resources by us contacting them
