Holy Cup Cannot Carry Disease

The Greek Orthodox Church in Australia has pushed back against coronavirus restrictions, saying that its churches would not stop having congregants sip wine from the same spoon because they say “the holy cup cannot carry disease.”

That message came from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, which said this week that while they were asking people who show signs of illness to avoid church gatherings, they would not stop from the worship tradition of drinking wine communally. As ABC.net.au reported, the move has come under fire from the Australian Medical Association, which said the Greek Orthodox church is putting people at risk.

How are we supposed to fight CV when people are this stupid?

Hopefully the parishioners will vote with their feet.

Or the government will shut them down.

Hmm
Essexgirlupnorth · 16/03/2020 20:08

At least the church of England has stopped it

endofthelinefinally · 16/03/2020 20:09

Where is the common sense?

Really123456 · 16/03/2020 20:11

Well it's a person's choice, if they feel worthy enough not to be smited by the disease by judgement of God!
I do agree it's not right they do it this way and there are other ways, even if people just bring their own cups!

Icare1234 · 16/03/2020 20:16

For once Catholic Church has seen sense. Apparently it was only very recent that there was a cup at all in Catholic Church except for the priest. Also not using shared hymn or other books, no hand shaking. I’m probably not going to church now though for at least weeks. A lot of the priests are 70+ so churches will shut.

ocarinan · 17/03/2020 10:05

Yeah it's a person's choice but it may lead to them infecting others. It's what happened in South Korea.

malonybalony · 03/04/2020 22:21

Idiots are going to get people killed

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 03/04/2020 22:24

It amazes me that people still believe this crap.

EasyTarget · 03/04/2020 22:28

I always thought it was a bit grim even without CV.

Marmite27 · 04/04/2020 08:59

Ffs, our parish stopped communion wine in February.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 04/04/2020 10:13

Well that problem is going to sort itself out.

Haworthia · 04/04/2020 10:19

I didn’t realise how common this was. A colleague of my brother told him she wasn’t worried about CV because she’s a child of God and doesn’t get ill.

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 04/04/2020 10:25

That sounds like exactly the sort of thing my mother & sister would get involved in. There are a worryingly large number of members of the congregation at their church who would do the same.

Ferfooksek · 04/04/2020 10:40

This is why I despise religion

MissusMaker · 04/04/2020 10:43

I'm Greek Orthodox and I'm embarrassed by this. My Mum was in church (UK) the week before lockdown and was told the same thing, she didn't partake (it's not compulsory) but many elderly parishioners would have. Obviously church is closed for the foreseeable now (UK) but it is terrible that people were likely infected in this way for their religion Sad

malonybalony · 04/04/2020 16:41

I hope your mum priest was prosecuted.

bellinisurge · 04/04/2020 16:41

I'm a Catholic. That's such bollocks.
