Pregnant and can’t buy handwash or sanitizer

We have one bottle of antibacterial handwash left at home and then we’re done. I tried to order some with my supermarket shop and DH went to a few local corner shops tonight, but couldn’t find it anywhere. Hand sanitizer is also sold out wherever I look.

Once the one bottle we do have runs out, what can I use to wash my hands and make sure DH and I stay hygienic and safe?

The lipids in soaps interfere with the lipid proteins in the virus thus basically rendering the virus ineffective. Soap bars of any variety will do this. The use of antibacterial gel should be as a substitute when soap for hand washing isn't available, not as well as. Antibacterial soap is a misnomer. All soap, used properly, becomes antibacterial. Same with sprays for hard surfaces, good old soapy hot water will do the same thing as a spray with Dettox.

MauriceandAlec · 16/03/2020 20:10

COVID-19 is a virus. Any soap will kill it.

YappityYapYap · 16/03/2020 20:12

PP's are right, you don't need anti bacterial hand wash because your aim is to wash the dirt off (and the virus of course). Have you seen the pepper thing people have been doing? Rubbing your finger with a bit of bar soap repels the pepper meaning it will also repel and take the virus off your hands. The virus also won't survive temperatures of 28 degrees+ I believe and most of us wash our hands in water hotter than that, usually around 35 degrees and following the guidance of 20 seconds means your hands are exposed to temps above 28 degrees for 20 seconds and literally washing the virus off so job done. Shower gel or bubble bath will be ok. I don't know what the deal is with anti bacterial stuff, it's more for killing things like ecoli and nasty germs from surfaces. Our hands can easy be washed with soap and be totally clean

doadeer · 16/03/2020 20:13

Just use those bars of old fashioned soap like pears they also last ages

UntamedWisteria · 16/03/2020 20:15

There was still bar soap left in my local supermarket.

That's just a s good, if not better than liquid hand wash.

Also less plastic so better for the enivronment.

It's what Florence Nightingale would have used.

Beesisabuzzin · 16/03/2020 20:16

If you're worried, go on the BBC Sounds app and search for the most recent episode of Inside Science. Everything you need to know about the virus and how it's transmitted. Also, how effective soap is in damaging the virus's outer layer.

I genuinely don't understand how this misinformation about antibacterial spray and handwash persists.

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 20:17

Just use ordinary soap if pregnant you are supposed to self isolate.,

Batfurger · 16/03/2020 20:34

@YappityYapYap you're talking shite. If the virus can't survive 28 degrees... any idea what normal body temperature is? Did you do any basic research before making your statements?

Fml, this pandemic has really highlighted the ignorance of many many people.

Skeeter2020 · 16/03/2020 20:42

@justarandom1 think about what you're saying. Why would an antibacterial agent be needed to kill a virus?

Gloves? :)

AishaBed · 29/08/2020 22:44

There is loads available on the Superdrug website. I am not pregnant but had the common sense to stock up a few weeks ago

PurpleDaisies · 29/08/2020 22:49

This is an old thread bumped for no obvious reason.

I’m sure the op has found some hand sanitiser by now.

Cloudburstagain · 29/08/2020 23:49

I just ordered antibacterial hand gel/sanitizer online from Boots. They had lots online, plus a range of liquid soap - inc antibacterial, plus bars of soap. Free delivery to my house due to amount spent. Am sure other chemists online do the same. Will be with me in a few days.

Gingerfish91 · 30/08/2020 00:51

This post is from March 🙄

She's quite possibly given birth as well Grin

To be honest, it doesn't really matter when this was posted because people still search answers up on mumsnet which is how I found it to begin with.

I'm 4 months pregnant and still can't find any hand gel either so it's still relevant.

At least anybody passing through will get some answers Wink

Really? Have a look on the boots website and there are about 20 different types available for home delivery/click and collect. Not sure what being pregnant has to do with it.
lifesalongsong · 30/08/2020 06:48

I started reading this thread thinking how anyone possibly not know that soap and water is all you need then noticed iwas started pre-lockdown Grin

Out of interest @rebeccajdaniels why did you think the OP might not have found some hand wash by now Grin

Wholeholes · 30/08/2020 06:50

I know this is an old thread but I’m astonished people still can’t get hand sanitiser! Shops like b&m are literally overflowing with it! All supermarkets I’ve been to recently have loads. 🤷🏼‍♀️

DianaT1969 · 30/08/2020 06:58

@rebeccajdaniels - why did you did this thread up? So strange.

rebeccajdaniels · 30/08/2020 11:26

I was looking up to see if pregnant women could use hand sanitizer to begin with and then this thread came up. I read somewhere it can heighten the chance of baby having a high birth weight so I was curious.

I'm in Birmingham and the only hand sanitizer I can get in store is obscure branded ones which I don't trust really.

Don't know why everyone's picking on me lol, I didn't notice this was posted in march Hmm

rebeccajdaniels · 30/08/2020 11:31

@KitKatastrophe I mentioned being pregnant because the op did, so that's what it's got to do with it. Wink
