My uni has suspended face to face classes

Just got the email telling me. Not sure when we can go back but all my classes are online for now.

I feel a bit sad to be honest.

We're not in the UK, was really relieved when DH's uni announced the cancellation of face-to-face classes effective this week. He already uses Moodle for exercises so can expand that, and the uni is recommending BigBlueButton for lectures. I'm just waiting for the time when I walk in to the living room saying something really embarrassing, and he's doing a live class... think we might need a 'do not disturb' notice on the door.

Our closure message from the VC is very much "ok you pesky kids got what you asked for now" in tone.

Wasn't the pesky kids - was the older and vulnerable students who really have had to hammer things home for it. I was flashing up concerns about placements 2+ weeks ago seeing how it was panning out but was just told off for being negative by staff.

ExCwmbranDweller · 16/03/2020 23:12

Hey lovely students, if you are thinking how exciting it is and planning on hanging out with your mates girlfriend whilst doing exciting midnight shopping raids to avoid crowds could you also think about maybe, just maybe, going home instead so your mum can fuss and look after you. Asking for a friend. Blush

Say what now @ExCwmbranDweller?

I'm a mature student, for a start. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Well I didn't know that about you but I just had a phone call with DS1 (not a very mature student!) hoping to tempt him home for soup and me gazing at him some looking after but he's staying up at uni. Part of me hoped a silver lining to this whole crazy mess would be getting to see a little bit more of him. As a mature student that would probably be a bit weird, although even if he was 40 I'd probably want him home still!

I did a second degree with OU and we had some cracking tutorials using online software and an earbud/microphone combo that I found quite hilarious.

Kuponut · 17/03/2020 06:11

Most of my course are heading home either today or tomorrow apart from one or two who need to still use some specialist software in our lab to start an assignment or who are staying a bit longer to focus on getting some work done.

ExCwmbranDweller, whilst that sounds super exciting, I will have to decline the hanging out and shopping trips. I don’t have any friends and my mum might find it a bit weird that I’ve abandoned my kids and husband to move back in with her and my dad though Grin

Not sure how I'm supposed to work from home and set up all the online teaching resources for my students at the same time. It's easier to do in uni.

Zacharyezrarawlings · 17/03/2020 06:41

excwmbran my thoughts exactly. My dd has just had all her lectures cancelled and is still saying she cant come home just yet. I get it, I do. She is an an adult and has to decide for herself. I'm not a panicy person but I actually just want all my chicks back in the nest right now.

FairyBunnyAgain · 17/03/2020 06:44

So pleased DD uni decided to close last week as she was a 5+ car journey away in a student house, she is now home as are all her housemates. Work has been set and they have online lectures and tutorials etc.

Northernsoullover · 17/03/2020 06:51

We had a lecture yesterday with Adobe something or other. It was excellent.
I emailed my tutor last Thursday saying I wouldn't be in. I got a reply back saying oh well up to you you might miss important content (Like Coronavirus? ). Friday we had an email saying all face to face teaching is suspended.

QuestionableMouse · 17/03/2020 11:40

I have a lecture over Skype in a bit. Should be interesting at least.

On the plus side, I'll be saving money not going in every day... Gotta have a silver lining, right?

My DD has had next to no teaching this year thanks to endless strikes cancelling lectures and tutorials.

She's now home as the University has closed but University accommodation are insisting we continue to pay her rent up until June even though she won't even be there. It's £750 pm ffs. They will only relent if she finds another student to rent her room. How?

I was happy to subsidise her whilst she was receiving an education but she has been to maybe half a dozen classes all year and as her loan barely overs half her rent I have to top up the rest from my salary.

I get that Covid-19 couldn't have been predicted by anyone by on top of all the strikes I feel a bit hard done by. It's like big corporations and companies can continue to collect monies due despite the crisis, but the rest of us who are losing our jobs left right and centre just have to suck it up and bear the financial hardship somehow.
