Escaping London ‘Lockdown’ before ‘too late’ ?

Stircrazyschoolmum · 16/03/2020 19:00

Since the announcement at 17.00, I’ve been pinged by 3 different mum friends/associates telling me they are escaping SW London to Norfolk / West Country whilst they still can. (There seems to be an opinion that London will lockdown imminently although that wasn’t how I read the press conference.)

To be fair, they all had plans to be away over the Easter holidays but now are saying they will go ASAP (one already packing car) and won’t necessarily return until the peak in London dies down.

I kind of thought avoiding non-essential travel meant you weren’t supposed to travel and misguidedly (?) thought restrictions on pubs/theatre etc wasn’t just a London thing? One family is staying with parents (healthy but still?)

I’m not passing judgement as everyone has to do what they believe to be best, just curious whether I’ve misinterpreted the guidance!

the countryside doesn't want them. our medical services struggle as it is as our own populations have increased to being bigger than can be handled. Some areas, especially coastal, have a HUGE aging population so hospitals are going to be stretched beyond belief. Sorry but people need to stay put where they are and get on with it.

LondonJax · 16/03/2020 20:46

Quite apart from them potentially bringing coronavirus with them to a more isolated community have they thought of the potential for contracting it?

After all, most holiday home places do a clean after the previous occupier. But I doubt many are doing the disinfecting of every surface (like you see when a healthcare person goes down with it and the surgery is closed). I wouldn't think they'd have time in a normal turnaround to do more than clean surfaces. So some 'clean' to the sight surfaces may well have the virus on it if the previous occupier was in the early stages.

Personally, I'd prefer to stay in my own home with my own germs - I know the level of cleaning I've done and that's been hard to keep up. At the moment I wouldn't 'escape' to anywhere as you just can't be sure what level of cleaning has been done. A quick wipe round with some Cif is enough normally, but won't touch this. I wouldn't risk it.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/03/2020 20:48

If I lived near a London hospital I wouldn’t travel deliberately to an area of crap health care.

Maybe I could swap and go and live in London.

Do people actually know how bad hospitals are in this end of the country? How many people they serve? Bloody hell, how selfish can you be.

Murrfect · 16/03/2020 20:48

Driving back to my little seaside Devon village today I was amazed at the extra traffic often driven by the over 70s. It tailed back 2 miles!!! It would be near a possible hospital for Cornwall too and seriously no dont why would you overwhelm our only lifeline !

As for being pregnant and coming down to a ‘remote cottage in Cornwall’ w t a f ?!?!

Why would you do that to yourself and your baby?!

Mum says if she gets it she’s got a choice between possibly recovering at home and definitely dying on a trolley so she’s not going in whatever. I guess it’s her choice and I’ll go and nurse her and isolate us, I’m just hoping she doesn’t get exposed

MitziK · 16/03/2020 20:49

Can't think of a better idea than for a pregnant woman to put herself in the arse end of nowhere. It would only take the fucking Air Ambulance to get her to a hospital if she's either already incubating the disease or develops another life threatening complication whilst she's down there. I'm sure they've got a spare helicopter hidden away somewhere for once it's contaminated....

Bloody stupid idea. Which is why we aren't off to infect DP's grandmother, father or the entire fucking village.

FrankieManca · 16/03/2020 20:49

It’s everywhere already , they won’t be spreading it it’s already spread to every corner of the country you’ll see in the coming days and weeks

Well even if that is true why are these people taking themselves off to put pressure on small local shops and scant healthcare already under pressure?

It is stupid and selfish.

Bakedbrie · 16/03/2020 20:53

This is a daft strategy for Londoners and here’s why

  1. Regional hospitals are stretched often caring for their elderly population - and there’s often only a choice of one.
  2. If you are sick while away and require antibiotics for a bacterial transfer post virus - you are not signed up to a local GP. If you don’t receive these drugs and fibrosis sets in, your chances of death on a ventilator increase.
  3. You have most of the supplies that you need in your home and won’t need to go out to stores to re purchase them in strained local stores.
  1. Coastal areas often have a lot of nursing homes and elderly folk...why put these people at enhanced risk?!
I say all this as a second home owner who will not be running away!
TiddyTid · 16/03/2020 20:54

Not only that. I've just heard they are already in this area last weekend emptying shelves to stock up their holiday homes ready for next weekend and an extended stay. You know what, I can't get what you've bought that's sitting there all week in your second home all week waiting for your arrival. Essentials I need now as a resident, so FUCK OFF. Seriously.

Murrfect · 16/03/2020 20:54

Why? Cause it’s nice clean rural air.... with limited health care, long supply chains and a distinct lack of happy peasants willing to dish up clotted cream ice cream and artisan beers until this is all over....

LittleRootie · 16/03/2020 20:55

they won’t be spreading it it’s already spread to every corner of the country you’ll see in the coming days and weeks

Gov stated today that London appeared to be weeks ahead of the rest of the country in terms of numbers infected so it will be spread faster by people coming out of London - exactly what they have said they want to avoid, to prevent NHS being overwhelmed all at once.

They should have predicted this reaction though and told Londoners to stay put.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 16/03/2020 20:56

I can't afford to lose £400 as we won't be able to rebook if we do
So don’t re book, it won’t be safe anywhere anytime soon anyway
You haven’t lost 400, you’ve lost a holiday. The money was gone anyway
^expressed far better

it’s her own second home and could isolate more effectively there with small kids due to space
But likely won’t, if they aren’t prepared to keep the kids in at home why would they keep the kids in at their second home? This country will be doomed like Italy/Spain because idiots with second homes will go there and spread it further 😕

FlamingoAndJohn · 16/03/2020 20:58

Also just for info - of course the advice to not go to pubs, theatres, anything else non-essential applies outside London too. What kind of twat would think it's magically different here ffs?!

There are some people who think London has all the pubs, theatres, museums etc, everywhere else is a wasteland.

zombieapocalypseisnigh · 16/03/2020 20:58

It's selfish.

Norway is famous for it's holiday cabins; many, many families have them. And they've all been ordered to not be in them/leave them if they are and go home because they are in communities that are small and less populated for much of the year. Their medical facilities can't cope if all the city folks are there hiding out, too, and get sick. cities can

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 21:01

None of the people in Italy thought they had CV too. No symptoms. Yet they spread it and caused new hot spots.

If it were me I’d struggle with seeing / thinking about them turning up.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/03/2020 21:02

I give up! I'm so happy for those who can afford to donate £400 for sod all to a holiday company. What part of the money wasn't gone, I was getting something for it don't people understand?

And when I said I can't rebook, I mean this year as I will probably use my annual leave at other times. I will therefore rebook next year, hence being happy with a voucher.

smellycatwee · 16/03/2020 21:04

fuck the flipping holiday!

not getting it are you?

you`re not the only one. suck it up buttercup.

carnivalisover · 16/03/2020 21:05

roarfeckingroar

A compromise might be for you both to self isolate for a week or two at home & if you both still have no symptoms, go then? (Because I guess this means you are either immune, or free of the virus?) Of course, you run the risk of more restrictions put in place by then.

CumbiaVillera · 16/03/2020 21:08

@Lynda07 all jokes aside, pm me if you need any essentials run over to Sydenham. Gin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/03/2020 21:09

smelly ODFOD. I am getting it, I'm not fucking going! If I wasn't getting it I'd think fuck it, I've paid for it so I'll go. I am allowed to be pissed off so I suggest you suck it up!

justasking111 · 16/03/2020 21:09

Here in N Wales we are so jealous of your outstanding healthcare our health board Betsi Cadwaladr has been in special measures for four years. You wait a year to see a consultant then another year for a hip op. We do not have many ventilators, someone said 4!!

Our surgeries are in lockdown, had a message tonight to say repeat scrips will be for three months now. No face to face consultations, just telephone them and a doctor will ring you back. If you need a prescription leave it in the post box outside nominating your chemist, then collect when ready.

We also have no loo roll, paracetamol, hand sanitiser, pasta, flour, etc.

Well, time to choose your friends more wisely, utter cunts, nothing less.
The same type of people who load their trolleys with
nappies, formula milk, calpol, and loo roll.

Inkpaperstars · 16/03/2020 21:13

Well, I will be staying in London, but I hope that I will be allowed to leave for a day if I need to deliver food to elderly relatives outside London. I would not go in their house obviously.

TheOrigBrave · 16/03/2020 21:14

I'm going to Southampton tomorrow to bring my uni son home. That's essential, right?

Katri999 · 16/03/2020 21:16

Oh so the country is based just in the bubble of London?
