Escaping London ‘Lockdown’ before ‘too late’ ?

Stircrazyschoolmum · 16/03/2020 19:00

Since the announcement at 17.00, I’ve been pinged by 3 different mum friends/associates telling me they are escaping SW London to Norfolk / West Country whilst they still can. (There seems to be an opinion that London will lockdown imminently although that wasn’t how I read the press conference.)

To be fair, they all had plans to be away over the Easter holidays but now are saying they will go ASAP (one already packing car) and won’t necessarily return until the peak in London dies down.

I kind of thought avoiding non-essential travel meant you weren’t supposed to travel and misguidedly (?) thought restrictions on pubs/theatre etc wasn’t just a London thing? One family is staying with parents (healthy but still?)

I’m not passing judgement as everyone has to do what they believe to be best, just curious whether I’ve misinterpreted the guidance!

It is incredibly selfish. But I can understand what they’re thinking. I’m also in London and my instinct is to scoop up the kids and take them somewhere rural for weeks where we can roam and feel ‘clean and safe’ and not come into contact with anyone until it’s all over. Obviously I’m not going to do that at all because it’s just not possible - but I really recognise the urge driving that behaviour.

Pinkdelight3 · 16/03/2020 19:36

That's what I thouht SomethingOnce, doesn't make sense to go somewhere farflung with fewer resources. I mean, if they're fleeing to a self-sufficient farm with amazing medical support on hand, I'd get it. But whatever happens, politicians tend to make London a priority. Sure it's got more people but it's also got more funding, more infrastructure etc.

What part of 'non essential travel' do people not understand?

'Is Your Journey Really Necessary?' - WW2 posters.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 16/03/2020 19:37

Times like this makes me thankful I live in a relatively unattractive shit hole.

Wannabangbang · 16/03/2020 19:38

Please tell them noooooo
I live on the coast and we do not want anymore of it here thankyou. Great everyone spreading it everywhere, just whats needed.

And this is exactly why are so called government need to act NOW not TOMORROW

Peachypips78 · 16/03/2020 19:38

@Mockerswithnoknockers Grin

Our Londis is run by a crook called Vinod- he buys things from Aldi and sells them for double the price!!!

CumbiaVillera · 16/03/2020 19:38

Don't come to Norfolk!!!!!

Zxyzoey31 · 16/03/2020 19:38

Family members who had direct and repeated contact with someone with confirmed c-19 left London for their second home (because they were self isolating) and then promptly wandered around the shops and supermarket in that town!!!!!!!!!
What can you say?!

UntamedWisteria · 16/03/2020 19:38

I'm in the country.

We have no toilet roll here.

Butterwhy · 16/03/2020 19:40

Selfish selfish selfish. Argh this is one reason why schools haven't closed sooner. FFS

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 19:40

Staying with parents is the killer. They don’t know right now if their dc have CV.

Didn’t something similar happen in Italy where people initially visited scenic coastal towns during lockdown, and then ended up spreading the virus to these towns? It’s probably too late for some of these Londoners!

Idris Elba tested positive today after being near a confirmed case - however he is asymptomatic. So no matter how healthy your colleagues etc feel, they may still be carrying the virus so it’s beyond selfish to run off to Bath etc

impostersyndrome · 16/03/2020 19:40

@PinkSparklyPussyCat do contact them and see what they can do. I got a full refund on my Easter holiday: hotel and rail, after emailing direct, even though I had no entitlement on paper.

TheMemoryLingers · 16/03/2020 19:40

YY to this. Very much doubt anyone has a second home anywhere near where I live.

smellycatwee · 16/03/2020 19:41

we have less supermarkets= less bog roll, less NHS resources. We are just about coping with the locals.

This is not the time for the Burnham Market gang to hot foot it up here to the gastropubs for mussels and fine wine lol! Seriously OP people here will hear their accents and back away from them!

And if they come I hope ole shuck comes looking for em.....

ffswhatnext · 16/03/2020 19:41

I can also understand some people wanting to get closer to older or vulnerable relatives. In a way because they are helping, already stretched services will be able to help those who have no one.

Just because people are fleeing doesn’t mean they will need to be in close contact with anyone.

CatTangle · 16/03/2020 19:42

@Peachypips78 - our local corner shop (not a Londis) does that too Confused

Buggedandconfused · 16/03/2020 19:43

Urgh, entitled bell ends. Can’t stand them

Lynda07 · 16/03/2020 19:44

I wouldn't leave London, where I live there have been no cases of C virus - yet - so I would probably be travelling to somewhere that has some. However I'm seventy so won't be allowed out anyway, the decision is taken out of my hands :-).

beebyjeeby · 16/03/2020 19:45

and this is why you have to have enforced lockdowns & fines etc.

As a Londoner I would prefer to be treated here more resources & staff 🤷‍♀️

OneOfTheGrundys · 16/03/2020 19:45

No. They probably already have it. It has spread already in London.
What selfish twats. What an utterly fuck you attitude.

Eddielzzard · 16/03/2020 19:46

Unbelievable selfish. And I say that as a Londoner.

Wobblywibblywoo · 16/03/2020 19:48

FFS very selfish.

OneOfTheGrundys · 16/03/2020 19:48

Re. more resources and staff. Absolutely.
My DH is on a chemo ward in London because he is neutropenic. They locked the ward down to ALL visitors on Friday. Hospitals here are only just limiting visitors. London is ahead of the curve.
